Various of procession of Shiite Muslims including men dressed in white, covered in blood from razor cuts, and hitting their heads with razors as they walk \u003cbr/\u003eHundreds of thousands of Shiite Muslims turned out across Lebanon on Sunday to mark Ashoura, the Shiite Muslim religious festival which marks the AD 680 battle in which Imam Hussein was killed.\u003cbr/\u003eThe death of the revered saint, the grandson of Islam's Prophet Mohammed, 14 centuries ago is traditionally marked with marches and battle re-enactments, and mortification of the flesh.\u003cbr/\u003eBy far the biggest Ashoura procession was in the southern suburbs of Beirut, a traditional Shiite area of the Lebanese capital and a Hezbollah stronghold.\u003cbr/\u003eAn estimated 500-thousand men, women and children marched through the streets waving yellow Hezbollah flags. \u003cbr/\u003eGroups of barefooted Hezbollah followers beat their chests in rhythm in a show of sorrow at the death of Hussein, but self-inflicting wounds is forbidden by Hezbollah.       \u003cbr/\u003eHezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah used the occasion to reject once again the Saudi peace plan, saying that accepting it would bring shame on the Arab nation.\u003cbr/\u003eHe went on to say that any invitation for the normalisation of relations with Israel would bind only those who called for it. \u003cbr/\u003eAddressing the gathering in a square, Nasrallah also called on the Arab Summit to offer their full support for the Palestinians and their Intifada by offering money and weapons because that was the only mean to protect them from the Israelis.\u003cbr/\u003eThe crowd shouted \"Death to America! Death to Israel\" and \"Trample on America! Trample on Israel.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIn the southern Lebanese market town of Nabatiyeh, thousands of Shiite Muslims processed through the streets, and scores of people slashed their heads with swords, razors and knives, or beat their chests in a show of grief. \u003cbr/\u003eA few men helped cut wounds in their children's heads.\u003cbr/\u003eMedics were on standby to help those profusely bleeding or fainting.\u003cbr/\u003eAshoura is observed every year by Shiite communities across the world, including those in the world's biggest Shiite country Iran, as well as in Pakistan and India.\u003cbr/\u003eHussein was killed in a battle on the plains of Karbala near the Euphrates River in 680 in modern day Iraq. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Karbala battle, part of a dispute over leadership of the faith that began after the prophet Mohammed's death, was a key event in Islam's split into the Sunni and minority Shiite branches.\u003cbr/\u003eHussein's death remains a powerful example of
