Various of the transient workers in the construction site\u003cbr/\u003eDr Peter Piot, the executive director of the joint United Nations programme on HIV/AIDS, was in China on Sunday, to help raise awareness for workers on the Beijing Olympic construction sites.\u003cbr/\u003ePiot is visiting China to encourage continued leadership and commitment to AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome), and to increase a multi-sector response to HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) and AIDS in China, including the involvement of the voluntary and business sectors.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I believe the initiatives among the construction workers, particular gearing up to the Olympics, is a very important initiative and will contribute to the fight against AIDS in China,\" Piot said.\u003cbr/\u003eChina started a five-year migrant worker anti-AIDS campaign last year by encouraging condom use and discouraging drug use, which is reportedly on the rise.\u003cbr/\u003eSome 120 (m) million migrant workers move around China in search of jobs in big cities, often spending years away from home, especially with the construction of a number of facilities for the 2008 Olympic Games in the capital.\u003cbr/\u003eMigrant worker Zhang, who is from Chengde of Hebei province which is close to Beijing, can go back home to see his wife and family, but for a large number of other workers who live further away, they can't go back home so frequently and some will have sex with prostitutes.\u003cbr/\u003eZhang said the government should do something to address the problems.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Sex is a natural physical need for the workers. use among construction workers.\u003cbr/\u003eIllegal drug use and prostitution was all but wiped out under communist China's founding leader Mao Zedong, but it has made a comeback in the past three decades as the country opened its economy to the outside world and introduced wide-ranging social reforms.\u003cbr/\u003eSome 650,000 people in mainland China are living with HIV/AIDS, according to the latest United Nations AIDS report, but only 32,500 are classified as female sex workers - a figure that social workers say is a gross
