This is SCiO, and according to its inventor it's the world's first pocket-sized infrared spectrometer.
Simply by pointing and clicking a miniature digital wand, users can see how many calories are in a piece of cheese or determine when a tomato will reach peak ripeness.
SCiO is being marketed for three applications - food, pharmaceuticals and horticulture. Its name evokes the Latin verb "to know."
Jerusalem pharmacist, Sajed Salaymeh is experimenting with a SCiO prototype in his store. He says the gadget will be a huge help for medical staff:
"This will help pharmacists and medical personnel to solve a big problem, especially in hospitals. They will have a great tool to identify medicines people took before they came, for emergency as example. They will know what they took. Did they take the original? Did they take a fake?"
SCiO was created by Dror Sharon, the CEO and co-founder of Consumer Physics in Tel Aviv. He explains how SCiO uses infrared light to identify the matter of objects.
"SCiO uses the age-old science of near IR spectroscopy - that's 'near infrared.' We shine light on materials. That light creates vibrations inside the molecules. Those vibrations absorb part of the light. We detect the reflection of the light. That reflection then creates a fingerprint that correlates with the underlying chemistry of the materials. So we are able to correlate between what we are measuring, to the chemistry, and send that information to your smartphone."
The tiny gadget is still limited to a few key applications designed for users' most immediate interactions with the physical world. But Sharon envisions a machine that will compile a massive collection of data allowing users to analyse the physical matter of everything exists around them.
"Every backer will have the chance if they want to, to scan the world around them and get more and more information. And if they come upon a material that we don't have in our database, they can actually upload it. And that way we'll accelerate the building of the world's largest database of matter," he says.
These features may seem more 'fun' than life-changing at this point. But ultimately, advocates say, the SCiO could have life-saving uses, such as identifying contaminated foods or determining whether a drug is counterfeit.
"It's really stepping big time into a whole new area," says Yossi Vardi, one of Israel's most successful high-tech investors. I think it's wonderful to see the level of innovation in Israel; and especially to see a totally new paradigm coming into being."
Sharon, an engineer with an MBA from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, describes the gadget as the next generation of "Googling." He says the current process of searching for information is cumbersome. The user of course must think of a concept or question, identify a relevant set of words, type them into a search engine and hope they get some useful results.
With the spectrometer, he says you can just point the gadget at an item without even necessarily knowing what it is. The device reads the item's molecular structure, matches the information to an ever-expanding database and then can send additional data to your smartphone.
Sharon imagines the SCiO changing the world in a whole number of ways with future uses in energy, soil analysis and the human body.
Sharon has raised more than USD $2 million from over 11,000 supporters on the fund-raising website Kickstarter. For now, he says the gadget's capabilities are limited by the relatively small size of its database.
But thousands of these investors will have a SCiO in their hands by the end of the year to help build Sharon's "database of matter," which will be stored online and shared between users.
Additionally, hundreds of these new backers will be enlisted as developers, and will be able to access the original SCiO software, which they can tweak and experiment with as they please.
Sharon says that while the Kickstarter campaign has been hugely successful, the real success has been building such a large and motivated community of developers.
"This is something very big," says Assaf Carmi, a physicist and early SCiO developer. "I think that it has a huge potential to absolutely change the way we touch the world, the way we communicate with everything around us."
Sharon expects the gadget to hit the market some time in
