Various of lift off of shuttle Endeavor to space station\u003cbr/\u003eForty years ago ten words beamed 240 thousand miles to Earth from the Moon - and forever changed the course of human exploration.\u003cbr/\u003eBuzz Aldrin, the second man on the moon, could not believe his good fortune as Apollo 11 roared into space.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring the final summer of the turbulent 60s, the voyage of Apollo 11 brought an entire globe together to look up at a full moon and watch.\u003cbr/\u003eBeginning in the early days of the Kennedy administration and for nearly a decade, America's space program committed to landing a man on the moon.\u003cbr/\u003eThis commitment was conceived not only as science, but also as a Cold War political struggle against the Soviet Union.\u003cbr/\u003eCalled the \"Apollo program\" - all resources were devoted to landing man on the moon. \u003cbr/\u003eAn early setback in the program left 3 astronauts dead - and forced NASA to rethink the science - Apollo 11 launched on July 16th, 1969.\u003cbr/\u003eThree astronauts on board, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Mike Collins.\u003cbr/\u003eCollins stayed behind in the command module while Armstrong and Aldrin landed on the lunar surface.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter a four day trip, the Apollo astronauts arrived at their destination.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen it came time to set Eagle down in the Sea of Tranquility, Armstrong improvised and manually piloted the ship past an area littered with boulders.\u003cbr/\u003eBy the time Eagle lands on the lunar surface, only 30 seconds of fuel remained. \u003cbr/\u003eAstronaut Neil Armstrong was the first out. \u003cbr/\u003eOver half a (b) billion people around the world watched Armstrong step onto the lunar surface. \u003cbr/\u003eHis boot print stayed on the moon's surface where no wind will wipe it away.\u003cbr/\u003eAldrin stepped out 19 minutes later and described what he sees around him on the moon.\u003cbr/\u003e\"So we're there. surface for two and a half hours, collecting samples and taking photographs.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Earth humans were transfixed by the spectacle beamed live into living rooms.\u003cbr/\u003eAldrin and Armstrong left behind an American flag and several other items, including the landing pod of their lander.\u003cbr/\u003eFour days later, the crew splashed down in the Pacific. \u003cbr/\u003eArmstrong's \"small step\" stood on the shoulders of thousands of Americans who worked in the new, fledgling space agency.\u003cbr/\u003eWhat put man on the moon 40 years ago was an audacious and public effort of engineering skill, management know-how and a public commitment.\u003cbr/\u003eA new national pride set in for Americans, and along with it,  a momentary global solidarity for the achievement.\u003cbr/\u003eForty years later, the future of the space travel for the United States is at a crossroads.\u003cbr/\u003eThe shuttle program is scheduled to end in six years, but development of the replacement space vehicle is behind schedule.\u003cbr/\u003eThere's no commercial interest in going back to the moon, and scientists believe the Apollo missions brought back enough samples that there's not much more science to be done.\u003cbr/\u003eThe current mission will complete construction of the International Space Station and only supply missions will remain
