(Sept. 14)\u003cbr/\u003e [Notes:ANCHOR VOICE]    \u003cbr/\u003e St. George, where polygamist leader Warren Jeffs is on trial, is about 50 miles from the Arizona border and the Fundamentalist Church of Latter-day Saints community where Jeffs is the leader.\u003cbr/\u003eALDER   :19     there is tremendous isolation btw the people of St. George and Colorado City.  and yet the old-timers can help but think, 100 years ago, 75 years ago, this place was very much like what Colorado City is now.  \u003cbr/\u003e(Super: Douglas Alder -- local historian) \u003cbr/\u003eIn 1950, the population of this corner of Southern Utah was almost entirely Mormon. \u003cbr/\u003eHARRISON        :10     Here, it's a silly question -- are you Mormon?  9 times out of 10 answer is yes.  (David Harrison -- IT Specialist, LDS member) \u003cbr/\u003eBut now the area is about two-thirds Church of Latter-day Saints, but members are eager to draw a clear distinction between their mainstream faith and the Fundamentalists. \u003cbr/\u003eThe town has grown 40% since the 2000, as the decedents of the Mormon settlers joined by snowbirds.  Many new residents say they hope the trial puts an end to the sect's practice of underage marriage and introducing teenage girls into sexual relationships.\u003cbr/\u003eBACHMAN :19     I see hardships placed on young women and men.  I wish that could be corrected.  I don't know if this trial is going to make any change in the whole system or not.  (Pat Bachman -- retiree) \u003cbr/\u003eOthers defend Jeffs right to freedom of religion and say that the state will never be able to wipe out polygamy entirely.\u003cbr/\u003eHARRISON        :06     You have other groups of polygamists out there.  One wife is enough for me. \u003cbr/\u003eSTANDUP :09     Mainstream Mormons share many of the same values with the polygamous sects: family is central, marriages are sacred and sealed by elders in a temple. \u003cbr/\u003eALDER   :22     underneath I think that people here are really quite torn about this issue because b/c the people in CO City are hardworking, virtuous straight arrows, very family oriented.
