When we say divorce referendum for instance, in this country we have the Legal Separation Bill, that entails everything that would be normally be in divorce barring the right to remarry so in some ways it is misleading to say divorce referendum - it's actually about the right to remarry.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Terry O'Leary, separated husband\u003cbr/\u003eThat right to remarry is at the very heart of the objections of the anti-divorce lobby.\u003cbr/\u003e95 percent of Irish people are Catholic and under the Catholic church, marriage is for life.\u003cbr/\u003eTraditionalists say any attempt to change the commitment to marriage will undermine marriage and ultimately damage the country.\u003cbr/\u003e\"What they are seeking, not them all by any means, but a limited number of them are seeking the right to remarry. And for seeking that right to remarry the price we would have to pay is to undermine the marriage of everybody else in the state. From being a permanent lifelong commitment to each other every marriage in the state would turn into a temporary contract which could be torn up at any time by one of the parties.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Judge Rory O'Hanlon, Former High Court judge\u003cbr/\u003eAdvertisements supporting the referendum amendment have accused the anti-divorce campaign of scare tactics. \u003cbr/\u003eWhile initially there was overwhelming support for divorce when the amendment was first proposed, that has now dwindled.\u003cbr/\u003eAnti-divorce campaigners have raised fears that families will not receive enough support.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd they have suggested that divorce would itself lead to an increase in marriage breakdowns.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The prohibition on divorce hasn't prevented Irish marriages from breaking down. They have been breaking down for years and the number have increased quite dramatically. My wife is Irish, she's not Catholic. We rear our family the way we want to rear them. They, I think, would stop us. There's only one faith as far as they're concerned. If they win it's a kick in the teeth for people from minority religions and from all religions.
