bus -- making them better for the environment. \u003cbr/\u003eThe trial is part of an ongoing programme that strives to implement technology that will help reduce emissions \u003cbr/\u003eThe special is out filling up on petrol or diesel, the new owners of a Lovecraft-equipped Mercedes will drive away on oil -- vegetable oil that is. \u003cbr/\u003ePerched on a trendy strip of Sunset Boulevard, Lovecraft''s speciality is the sale of Mercedes-Benz diesels, converted to run on vegetable oil. \u003cbr/\u003eIn fact, they're modified to run on new or recycled vegetable oil, or soybean oil, or even regular old diesel fuel if you still want to pay the price. \u003cbr/\u003eBrian Friedman -- owner of Lovecraft Biofuels -- fills up a veggie, fuel-powered Mercedes in the company garage from a can of vegetable oil. \u003cbr/\u003eFriedman says you can buy the oil at local supermarkets or better still get the leftover cooking oil from restaurants for free. \u003cbr/\u003eFriedman started converting Mercedes about four years ago in San Francisco. \u003cbr/\u003eFor about US$700 dollars, Brian's mechanics will convert a diesel Mercedes to run on one hundred-percent vegetable oi \u003cbr/\u003eBut the LA-based dealer says he can't keep up with the demand. \u003cbr/\u003eThe rising price of fuel, and concerns for the environment, are some of the reasons driving some buyers to Brian's veggie car lot. \u003cbr/\u003eOil consumption in India has more than doubled in recent years. \u003cbr/\u003eThe country is now looking for alternatives to oil, and is evaluating biofuels as part of a package of renewable energy sources. \u003cbr/\u003eSugar cane, one of the region's most dominant crops, is being used to create alternative fuel sources. \u003cbr/\u003eEvery day farmers are bringing load after load of sugar cane to this sugar mill in Simbhaoli, in the state of Uttar Pradesh. \u003cbr/\u003eThe farmers say they are happy to be receiving more money for their goods. \u003cbr/\u003ePalm oil and sugar cane are the dominant crops in the region, but everything from coconut oil to vegetable oil and cow dung are being tested as \u003cbr/\u003epotential sources for fuel. \u003cbr/\u003eAnother option in India is the jatropha plant. \u003cbr/\u003eAcross Asia, governments are searching the plantations and farms for crops that can help offset their dependence on imported fossil fuels. \u003cbr/\u003eBut with oil prices reaching US$70-a-barrel. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Indian government has announced plans to set aside 98 million acres of land where jatropha can be grown. \u003cbr/\u003eIt hopes to substitute twenty percent of diesel with it by 2011. \u003cbr/\u003eBut it is not that simple. \u003cbr/\u003eEnvironmentalists have complained that the push for biofuel could reduce the land available for food crops and lead to the conversion of virgin forests into biofuel-related plantations. \u003cbr/\u003eIndia is currently mixing five percent of ethanol with gasoline in about half the country and wants to increase that to twenty percent in the next decade. \u003cbr/\u003eIt wants to increase its use of renewable energy from five percent to
