Various of children playing in floodwaters
Natural disasters can devastate communities, tearing apart families and ripping through homes and places of work.
In the Philippines millions of lives were turned upside down when two back-to-back typhoons killed nearly a thousand people, most of them buried in mudslides.
Now the task is to help some of the most vulnerable, including hundreds of children.
When disasters strike, children are the most at risk as families struggle with the elements.
When Tropical Storm Ketsana struck the Philippines on September 26, the resulting flood that inundated whole villages left thousands without shelter.
For the children in these families, not only were they traumatised by the experience of having to escape floodwaters and the continuous rain, but after the storm, as parents struggle to provide shelter and food for the family, the children became detached from their normal daily life.
Tropical Storm Ketsana brought the worst flooding to the Southeast Asian country in four decades, chasing some victims to their rooftops to escape the rising water and sweeping others down raging rivers.
The storm struck Manila, one of the world's largest cities with about 12 million people, and dumped more than a month's worth of rain in just 12 hours.
Flooding was worst around the Pasig River that cuts through the capital, including wealthy suburbs and shanty towns.
Filipino officials said the homes of some 2.3 million people are affected, and 567,000 are seeking shelter in relief centres.
Most of these relief centres are now in covered courts scattered in several cities still affected by floodwaters.
It is here where Save The Children, an international organisation, is helping children in need.
They've set up food distribution and Child Friendly Spaces for thousands of families cramped in evacuation shelters.
"We have setup a child-friendly space. During the day after the parents have to leave the evacuation centre in order to return to their needs and so the children who do not have any safe space to go to, there were some protection issues that we were concerned with, and so we have setup this space to kind of provide activities and to have the children kind of have a safe space for them to be able to go to during the day," explains Shaina Pfeiffer, a programme manager for the organisation who flew all the way from the United States to help in this mission.
"We do a lot of educational activities, we have them do some arts and crafts and other games, so they kind of try do all of these while they are still here in the evacuation centre and they resume a somewhat normal life and be with other children," she adds.
The group is based in the evacuation centre where the children are provided with their own space and able to join activities like storytelling, drawing and games.
These activities serve to pass away their time and are educational at the same time.
More importantly, the space and the activities draw them away from playing in the floodwaters, which by now are harbouring germs and illnesses caused by the stagnant water.
Pfeiffer explained about the importance of providing the proper spaces for the children.
"During an emergency or natural disaster, there is a lot of things that can increase children's vulnerability, whether it is physical hazards, the flooding, other objects that could be dangerous for children. But also to give them a safe space to play so they are not playing out the in the flooded waters, which might be carrying diseases and other illnesses, and to kind of just provide an environment in which they can be children, and to kind of have a day that might look a little bit normal to them,"
Indeed, the parents seem to agree, as even they themselves are left helpless in these situations.
"We cannot go home because the flood is still high in our area," says Maria Lourdes Betgo, an evacuee from Taguig with three children.
Her husband, Carlito Betgo, Jr., could not agree more with what the Save the Children is doing.
"That is okay. It is really a big help to them," adds Delia Lapeng, a 59-year old mother of eight.
Tropical Storm Ketsana on September 26 inundated much of the capital, Manila, and surrounding areas, killing 464 people.
It was followed by Typhoon Parma, which unleashed mudslides along the Cordillera mountain range October 3, leaving 465 dead.
Typhoon Lupit was due to
