Pan from schoolchildren to passing captured elephant\u003cbr/\u003eA court in Malawi has stopped the evacuation of more than 60 elephants from a rural area where they were getting into deadly battles with farmers.\u003cbr/\u003eA group of residents objected, saying the elephants and the forest they live in should be conserved as a national\u003cbr/\u003epark.\u003cbr/\u003eIFAW, the international fund for animal welfare started an operation on 8 June to move the Phirilongwe elephants from the Mangochi district to Majete Game Reserve, Malawi's only fenced park.\u003cbr/\u003eThe relocation aims to end conflict between elephants and villagers in Phirilongwe, south of Lake Malawi as IFAW's Campaign Officer Neil Greenwood explains :\u003cbr/\u003e'IFAW was approached by the government of Malawi to assist them with the relocation of these Phirilongwe elephants, and that's what we're going to be doing here for the next three weeks or so. There's been a lot of human-elephant conflict in the area and we're hoping to be able to move these elephants out and eliminate a whole lot of problems.'\u003cbr/\u003eThe elephant translocation us being carried out by Conservation Solutions, who have been contracted by IFAW.\u003cbr/\u003eThey start by herding elephants towards waiting trucks and ground teams, with a helicopter.\u003cbr/\u003eInside the helicopter, Conservation Solutions veterinary Doctor and co-owner Andre Uys darts elephants, located by their previously fitted radio collars.\u003cbr/\u003eGround teams then approach the partially tranquilised elephants to ensure firstly that their trunks are not constricted and the elephants breathe properly.\u003cbr/\u003eElephants are measured as a standard procedure.\u003cbr/\u003eThey are then inspected for injuries sustained as a result of human-wildlife conflict.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of this first group of nine elephants had lost the last part of its trunk to a snare.\u003cbr/\u003eElephant cows and calves are carefully numbered to ensure they are matched up at Majete Game Reserve.\u003cbr/\u003eThe alternative can easily result in a female elephant killing a strange calf it is placed with.\u003cbr/\u003eVet Uys says although the capture is stressful for the elephants, once tranquilised they become relaxed. \u003cbr/\u003e'Fortunately in terms of the capture exercise it's a very very short duration of stress. And once they're immobilised the stress is taken away with the aid of tranquilisation.'\u003cbr/\u003eWith tranquilisation constantly topped up, these nine elephants were then moved the approximately 300 kilometres \u003cbr/\u003e(186 miles) south to Majete Game Reserve.\u003cbr/\u003eKester Vickery is co-owner of Conservation Solutions.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says these elephants need to be within a protected area.\u003cbr/\u003e'The ideal scenario would be to set up a game reserve to look after these elephants in the area, but there is no finance and there is no suitable area for these elephants� for a long term solution. involved in the court order. \u003cbr/\u003eBut Kamlepo Kalua, national leader of an opposition political party, the Malawi Democratic Party, is to continue Khan's work to try to keep the Phirilongwe elephants in the Mangochi area.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Phirilongwe elephants in Malawi's Mangochi district have already been responsible for 14 human deaths, according to the Malawi Department of National Parks and Wildlife.\u003cbr/\u003eIn turn these elephants have been subject to snares, bullets, arrows and other alterations with humans in the area.\u003cbr/\u003eNow the fate of the remaining Phirilongwe elephants, one of the world's last free-ranging herds, now hangs in the balance of continued activism and the Malawi judiciary.\u003cbr/\u003eThe consensus is the human-animal conflict is untenable.\u003cbr/\u003eBut local opposition to the elephant move, instigated by Ismail Khan, is hoping for an alternative solution to the elephant translocation: the development of a local elephant
