We have to do all this work by hand, most of us do, at the end of the twentieth century.  In more developed countries things are ok, but here we peasants are not needed by anyone.\\\"\u003cbr/\u003e0.56\tMoldova is a land that has been traded back and forth between Romania and Russia throughout its history.\u003cbr/\u003eToday the official language is Moldovan, (PAUSE AT 1.05) identical to Romanian, but the country still looks as much to Moscow as it does to Bucharest.\u003cbr/\u003e1.13\tThe rich soil of Moldova is where its people have always made their living despite who their lords may have been.\u003cbr/\u003e1.21 \tJust outside Chisinau (PRON:  Kish-ih-now) the capital, are the vineyards of Cricova (PRON:  Kree-koh-vah), one of Moldova's most famous wineries, and some nine years after the end of Communism, still in government hands.\u003cbr/\u003eHarvesters are picking the last of the season's grapes.  As with many things in Moldova, the wine industry is woefully inefficient.\u003cbr/\u003eThere's  not been any real investment  since independence and the technology is outdated.\u003cbr/\u003e1.54\tProduction techniques are primitive compared to France or Spain, but Moldova is still capable of producing a well regarded wine.\u003cbr/\u003eCricova produces some thirteen million bottles of still and sparkling wines each year.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd its Chardonnays and Reislings are drunk mainly in the United Kingdom and Singapore, although the former Soviet Union remains an important market.\u003cbr/\u003e2.20\tSome sixty kilometres of tunnels several metres under the earth create a perfect environment for storing wine.  The wine cellars of Cricova hold the treasures of the Moldovan wine-making.\u003cbr/\u003e2.37           The chief economist says that the weak Moldovan government can no longer subsidise the winery and that privatisation is the only answer.\u003cbr/\u003eWe want very much for there to be privatisation because the government cannot help us or get investment for our winery. To do this we needed to be privatised. And we want to be privatised, but only  to a company that already has a lot of experience with wine production.\u003cbr/\u003e3.15\tThe International Monetary Fund is putting pressure on the Government to privatise the state system.\u003cbr/\u003e   \tThe Moldovan Prime Minister Dumitru Braghis is spearheading efforts to turn the last five,  largest wineries over to private ownership.\u003cbr/\u003e3.30\tHe has been trying to sell the idea to the parliament.  But with the economy going nowhere and public dissatisfaction high, as in many other countries in the former Eastern Bloc, the communists are back in power.\u003cbr/\u003eIn fact in the present Moldovan parliament they are the largest party.\u003cbr/\u003eBut today the deputies have given in to IMF pressure and the privatisation bills slowly progresses towards the statute book.\u003cbr/\u003e3.57\tJerzy Osiatynski (PRON: YEH-zhee oh-shee-ah-TIN-ski) is an adviser to the Moldovan government.  He believes that wine is the kind of industry offering the country a lifeline.\u003cbr/\u003eAgriculture is the key sector in the Moldovan economy and wine production and spirit production, cognacs and so on, these are the hit products of this country and of course if they can develop good marketing and if they can ensure steady quality of the produce they manufacture here I am sure that they will significantly improve the welfare of the country.\u003cbr/\u003e4.35\tIt was the Russian financial crisis of 1998 which poleaxed the Moldovan economy..\u003cbr/\u003eRussia was- and still is - the chief destination of most Moldovan exports.\u003cbr/\u003eThe IMF estimates that the Moldovan economy has shrunk by 60 per cent since independence.\u003cbr/\u003eThe average salary is only thirty US dollars.\u003cbr/\u003e4.56\tPrime Minister Braghis,  a former communist, says all this has made change difficult.\u003cbr/\u003e\\\"You have to remember that in 1980 twenty-five per cent of our GDP came from a few enterprises, about ten enterprises which belonged to the former Soviet military industry and all of them have stopped now.  That is only one example.  We have other examples because of the changes in the society.  We have closed a lot of enterprises which are not efficient now. And this is one of the biggest problems for the republic now to have enough working places and to develop a strategy for poverty reduction.\\\"\u003cbr/\u003e5.42\tIndependence saw Moldova split from the Soviet Union but descend into Civil War itself.  The country divided along  traditional ethnic lines with one faction pulling towards Romania and the other towards Moscow.\u003cbr/\u003e                   The Moldovan government continued to control most of the country from Chisanu - but a breakaway republic was declared in Trans-Dneister. This new state was made up mainly of ethnic Russians and Ukrainians who feared Moldovan nationalists wanted to reunite with Romania.\u003cbr/\u003e6.12\tThis is the Trans-Dniester Moldovan Republic, a virtual museum of the Soviet Union.\u003cbr/\u003eLenin still stands and symbols of the old Soviet Union, which quickly disappeared from other parts of Russia in the late eighties, still embellish the capital Tiraspol.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd although the \\\"republic\\\" may not be recognised by any other nation, if they want to fight for their independence, they certainly have the toys for it.\u003cbr/\u003e6.37\tToday is a holiday in Tiraspol.  September 2nd was the tenth anniversary of the declaration of independence..\u003cbr/\u003eAnd with what would bring a tear to many a Communist eye, the nation's best soldiers and polished military hardware are paraded through the centre of town.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is a brash statement of military bravado for the politicians back in Chisinau.\u003cbr/\u003e\tThey want nothing to do with what they see as Romanian nationalists. They've had a referendum calling for independence - and they're proud of the result.\u003cbr/\u003e\\\"In the referendum the people said that we must create our own state so that we would not have to live in a state where they shouted slogans like the ones that they used to shout back then: \\\"Russians beyond the Dniester and Jews into the Dniester!\\\" This is a call for genocide and discrimination. As a result of these referendums the people decided that they did not want to live in a state that propagates Nazism and Nationalism.\\\"\u003cbr/\u003e7.59\tThis Steel Works was one of the largest industries in Moldova and today it still employs over 4,000 people. But now its in Trans-Dneister.  It exports steel to some twenty countries, including the EU, Canada and Taiwan.\u003cbr/\u003eLocated in the north of the republic,  just a couple of military checkpoints separates it from Moldova proper and the investment it needs.\u003cbr/\u003eThe mill's director says that it has been hard to get much-needed loans from Western banks because his mill is in a country nobody recognises.\u003cbr/\u003e\\\"That is probably why. Because Trans-Dneister is not a recognized country is probably why the banks are so afraid to give us a loan. But nevertheless we find ways to get along.\\\"\u003cbr/\u003e8.52\tAnd the people of Trans-Dniester are feeling the pressure.  The economy here is even worse than in Moldova proper.\u003cbr/\u003eMost of the people just want Moldova to be one country again.\u003cbr/\u003e9.03\tTrans-Dniester prints its own money with a dazzling number of zeroes.\u003cbr/\u003e\\\"I think Moldova should be united.  I think that Moldova should be united, but because I am a Russian-speaker, I think that the Trans-Dneister region should have a status of some sort and that not only Moldovan should be the language.\\\"\u003cbr/\u003e\\\"All in all it was much better when we were together, much better.\\\"\u003cbr/\u003e9.34\tMoldova has had a decade of relative political freedom.  But there's scant sign of any tangible fruits from independence or the material benefits many thought would accompany it.\u003cbr/\u003e\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003c/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv
