But now that the project has come in things have changed. We used to move from our old fields when they were no longer fertile and clear new land to grow cereals there. Pan of a Nhambita closed canopy forest\u003cbr/\u003eThe global carbon market was worth $64 billion in 2007 and continued to grow in 2008 according to the World Bank.\u003cbr/\u003eThe goal of carbon credits is to mitigate the effects of climate change.\u003cbr/\u003eCompanies pay for excessive carbon emissions and the money is spent in developing nations to reduce pollution or store carbon.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's a scheme that's working well in Nhambita in central Mozambique.\u003cbr/\u003eThe remit of UK company 'Envirotrade'  is to manage the sales of carbon offsets to businesses and individuals to support forestry and community projects. \u003cbr/\u003eThree of its current projects are here in Nhambita in central Mozambique. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to CEO, Charles Hall, since almost all forestry activities are excluded in the Kyoto Protocol compliance market, Envirotrade's carbon credits are sold on a voluntary basis. \"We are selling our carbon credits to companies that are not required by international agreement to buy the credits, or to remain under a certain limit, but rather companies that are desiring to offset their carbon footprint or for corporate social responsibility reasons are being seen to be doing something to contribute to reducing carbon emissions,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Nhambita Envirotrade Project covers an area of 30,000 hectares.\u003cbr/\u003eAs with other communities across Mozambique, Nhambita was hit hard by the 16 year war that ended in 1992.\u003cbr/\u003eCarbon payments are made annually to each farmer according to the amount of trees planted and their condition, which is regularly monitored.\u003cbr/\u003eOnce farmers decide to join the project, their farm is mapped out by an Envirotrade technician using GPS.\u003cbr/\u003eCommunity Technicians like Joao Eduardo Rangisi calculate which of their seven systems of tree-planting best suits each farm.\u003cbr/\u003eRangissi says they have selected intercropping for this field. \u003cbr/\u003e\"This system of Faiderherbia tree intercropping helps fertilisation of the soil, and it's good for soil conditioning, and it also helps in protecting the crops from heavy winds - it acts as a windbreaker,' he explains. \u003cbr/\u003eThe intercropping system chosen here involves planting trees such as the faidherbia in between the crops.\u003cbr/\u003eThe leaves fall down forming a natural compost for the crop.\u003cbr/\u003eSaplings are provided by five community-run nurseries, which are paid for by Envirotrade carbon offset payments.\u003cbr/\u003e230,000 trees have already been planted in the Nhambita community since 2003.\u003cbr/\u003eEnvirotrade is planning on handing out 180,000 trees in 2009.\u003cbr/\u003e90% of the Nhambita community is now involved in the Envirotrade project. \u003cbr/\u003eRaymundo Eduardo Rangissi explains that until recently he carried out destructive slash and burn farming methods.\u003cbr/\u003eThis involves clearing away forest, burning the undergrowth and growing crops until the soil is exhausted - within about three years, then clearing more forest for slash and burn agriculture.\u003cbr/\u003eWith the intercropping system the same piece of land can be used for ten years or more, reducing deforestation, and introducing new trees, as Rangissi explains. \u003cbr/\u003eEnvirotrade Mozambique country manager, Piet van Zyl is based in the Nhambita community.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says farmers sign a seven year contract, but he hopes the project will extend beyond that time period.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"If a farmer has four systems of trees, and he plants one every second year, then we talk about eight years, which would then run up to fifteen years. That tree remains the property of the person who planted it - they are proud of their trees.\" he says.  \u003cbr/\u003eEnvirotrade is also involved in establishing and training community-run micro-enterprises such as timber.\u003cbr/\u003eThis uses mainly dead logs, although sawyers now have a 75 cubic metre annual timber licence, allowing them to selectively cut old and dying trees. \u003cbr/\u003eThere is also commercial-scale honey production and other initiatives intended to create a sustainable source of income for the Nhambita community.\u003cbr/\u003eEnvirotrade is working to improve poor communities through carbon sequestration and conservation.
