Wide of family with their belongings on the bank of the river\u003cbr/\u003ePakistan dispatched medical teams on Monday to the deluged northwest amid fears that cholera could spread in the aftermath of the worst floods in the country's history, an official said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe disaster has already killed up to 1,200 people and forced another 2 (m) million to flee their homes. \u003cbr/\u003eResidents have railed against the government for failing to provide enough emergency assistance nearly a week after extremely heavy monsoon rains triggered raging floodwaters in Khyber-Pakhtoonkhwa province.\u003cbr/\u003eThe government says it has deployed thousands of rescue workers who have so far saved an estimated 28-thousand people and distributed basic food items. \u003cbr/\u003eThe army has also sent some 30-thousand troops and dozens of helicopters, but the scale of the disaster is so vast that many residents said it seems like officials are doing nothing. \u003cbr/\u003eThousands more people in Khyber-Pakhtoonkhwa province remain trapped by the floodwaters.\u003cbr/\u003eMany residents of Pakistan's northwest waded through the flood water to dry land - some to makeshift shelters, others to their damaged houses to salvage their remaining possessions.\u003cbr/\u003eMarjan Khan, a resident of the small village of Shapra, in Charsada district, which is one of the areas hit hardest by the floods, said they have lost everything, but were hoping to salvage some sacks of wet wheat which he said was \"almost spoiled.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"We have nothing, we are just depending on the mercy of God, nothing left except this wet wheat,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eElsewhere in Charsada, some locals were lucky to reach a shelter inside a school building.\u003cbr/\u003eNow people in the northwest also face the threat of waterborne disease, which could kill thousands more if health workers cannot deliver enough clean drinking water and treat and isolate any patients in crowded relief camps.\u003cbr/\u003eOfficials have yet to receive concrete reports of cholera cases, but fear of an outbreak is high, according to the top medical official in Khyber-Pakhtoonkhwa.\u003cbr/\u003ePatients with stomach problems from dirty water are being treated in government medical camps, the official said.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the District Hospital in the town of Charsada, doctors set up a special flood ward, where victims are receiving treatment, and others are being vaccinated against diseases.\u003cbr/\u003e\"People are already complaining about scabies. The majority of the affected consists of children,\" said Dr Hamid Khattak.\u003cbr/\u003eRepresentatives from a charity allegedly linked to the Lashkar-e-Taiba militant group also distributed food and offered medical services to victims in Charsada.\u003cbr/\u003eThe death toll from the disaster has ranged from about 870 provided by the prime minister's office to 1,200 given by Bashir Ahmed Bilour, a senior minister in Khyber-Pakhtoonkhwa, who warned that it could go even higher. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the Dera Ismail Khan district, the army was setting up tent camps for the displaced and opened a registry where people could put their names down and receive aid.\u003cbr/\u003eColonel Qamar Khan, in charge of a relief camp in the Kacha area, said authorities are providing tents and said.\u003cbr/\u003ePakistan's international partners have tried to bolster the government's response by offering millions of (US) dollars in emergency aid.\u003cbr/\u003eThe disastrous flooding comes at a time when the weak and unpopular Pakistani government is already struggling to cope with a faltering economy and a brutal war against Taliban militants that has killed thousands of people in the past few years.\u003cbr/\u003eThe United Nations and the United States announced on Saturday that they would provide 10 million US dollars each in emergency
