Various of children of class 6R \u0026amp; 6I playing dodge ball\u003cbr/\u003eIt's twelve years since world leaders struck a deal on carbon-capping in Kyoto.\u003cbr/\u003eChildren born in the Japanese city in 1997 are now calling on world leaders due to meet this century in Copenhagen to act on climate change.\u003cbr/\u003eKyoto, 11th December 1997 - and the historic deal on carbon capping is agreed.\u003cbr/\u003eThis landmark moment set the agenda for the global approach to climate change into the 21st century.\u003cbr/\u003eBut what has this agreement, with its binding targets for 37 industrialized countries and the European community for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, meant for those born in Kyoto twelve years ago?\u003cbr/\u003eAnd what are their messages to the world leaders due to gather in Copenhagen for the 7th - 18th December summit? \u003cbr/\u003eRitsumeikan Elementary school lies in the north of Kyoto City. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is a private school that currently has 719 pupils aged between 6 - 12 years old. \u003cbr/\u003eIn many respects this is not a typical Japanese elementary school. \u003cbr/\u003eDiffering from the state education system, pupils entering this school are required to pass an examination they sit at the age of 5. \u003cbr/\u003eRitsumeikan has its origins in a school founded in 1869 in the grounds of the Imperial Palace by Prince Kinmochi Saionji.  \u003cbr/\u003eUnder the leadership of the Prince's former secretary Nakagawa Kojuro the school was opened to working people in 1900.  \u003cbr/\u003eIt officially took on the name of Ritsumeikan in 1913 \u003cbr/\u003eThe name Ritsumeikan is derived from a passage in an ancient Chinese text and means a \"place to establish one's destiny.\" \u003cbr/\u003eA message these children have taken to heart - especially on the issue of climate change.\u003cbr/\u003eTo some the Copenhagen meeting represents the last chance to save the planet from a rise in temperature of 2 degrees Celsius or higher.  \u003cbr/\u003eAs such the decisions reached by world leaders will have implications for the destiny of millions, particularly the generation growing up in the wake of the Kyoto Protocols. \u003cbr/\u003eThe 60 children of class 6R and 6I were all born in 1997, or the early months of 1998. \u003cbr/\u003eA little before or after the initial adoption of the Kyoto Protocols. \u003cbr/\u003eThey are now 11 or 12 years old and have similar interests to most Japanese children. \u003cbr/\u003eKamizono Shinosuke is extremely fond of Nintendo Wii and DS and lists his hobbies as playing computer games, sleeping and reading.  \u003cbr/\u003eMatsuki Tomoya, like his friend Ito Sohei, is a fan of the Hanshin Tigers, Osaka's baseball team. \u003cbr/\u003eHe enjoys reading baseball Manga. \u003cbr/\u003eKyoto City is not on the frontline of climate change, and the children have not experienced its effects in the direct way that a child in Bangladesh may have, for example.  \u003cbr/\u003eAs Sakama Mie explains the meaning of climate change \"hasn't really been brought into clear focus\" yet. \u003cbr/\u003e\"But we have learned that, sooner or later we too will probably directly experience the damaging effects of climate change,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eBut like millions of people around the globe the children of class 6 are aware that they are likely to experience the detrimental effects of climate change in the future. \u003cbr/\u003eIssues relating to global warming have been incorporated into various elements of the Ritsumeikan curriculum. \u003cbr/\u003eA science class lays out the merits and demerits of hybrid cars for example. \u003cbr/\u003eThe children are all conscious that they have a role to play in mitigating the effects of global warming.  \u003cbr/\u003eOyama Rikiya says he refrains from using air conditioning.\u003cbr/\u003e\"And make sure we turn lights out when they are not needed,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eNoguchi Kunika says he walks or uses bicycles to travel short distances.\u003cbr/\u003ePerhaps the most radical expression of commitment comes from Ito Sohei, who explains that he goes to bed early to save on unnecessary use of electricity. \u003cbr/\u003eHow far this is the result of personal volition or inspired parental persuasion is unclear, but all the children are aware that global warming is an issue that will effect their futures.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe children of Kyoto also have messages that they want to deliver to the participants of the Copenhagen negotiations.  \u003cbr/\u003eSakama Mie says big countries like America, China and India will need to cooperate.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Japan is a small country, so if America, China and India do not cooperate, I do not think we will be able to reduce global warming. So I hope that all those countries will adopt targets for reduction of emissions.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAnd like many others Sakama Mie recognises the critical role that the U.S. will play in the
