Various people in internet cafe\u003cbr/\u003eChina has been hailed as the next big internet battleground.\u003cbr/\u003eThe country has an ever-increasing population of Internet users who now number close to 200 million.\u003cbr/\u003eBut as Internet firms scramble over each other for a slice of the Chinese market, concerns have been raised over China's handling of internet privacy and censorship -- after Yahoo gave information to authorities that helped to identify and jail a dissident journalist. \u003cbr/\u003eHangzhou recently hosted China's second Internet Summit, sponsored by Alibaba.com -- the largest e-commerce company in China.\u003cbr/\u003eJust last month, Yahoo paid one-billion (Billion) US dollars for a 40 percent stake in Alibaba.com, with the permission of the Chinese government.\u003cbr/\u003eBut according to media watchdog group, Reporters Without Borders, Yahoo's investment has come at the cost of freedom of information.\u003cbr/\u003eIt has accused Yahoo of censorship, revealing that Yahoo Holdings provided the Chinese Government with information that helped link a journalist's personal email account to the IP address of his computer. \u003cbr/\u003eThis information led to Shi Tao being jailed for 10 years, for sending an e-mail containing information about the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre which the Government considered a \"state secret.\"\u003cbr/\u003eCalifornia-based Yahoo has defended its actions, saying its Hong Kong branch is required to comply with Chinese law. \u003cbr/\u003eBut at the China Internet Summit, Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang refused to comment. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"I do not have that information...no comment.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Jerry Yang, Yahoo co-founder\u003cbr/\u003eOther Chinese journalists have faced similar charges as their leaders struggle with information control in the Internet age.\u003cbr/\u003eFormer US president Bill Clinton, a keynote speaker at the summit, didn't respond to questions about Shi's case but later addressed the issue of censorship.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"I think the Chinese system will have to become more tolerant of dissent.
