Myanmar has...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eBicycle rickshaws, or the \"three wheel\" as locals refer to them, are still one of the most popular ways of getting around Yangon. \u003cbr/\u003eRinging bicycle bells echo through the crowded streets and alleys of townships, and suburbs. \u003cbr/\u003eMyanmar has only recently emerged from a half-century of isolation and military rule, embracing political and economic reforms. \u003cbr/\u003eForeign investment is now welcome and international sanctions have been lifted. \u003cbr/\u003eThis change is reflected on the roads of Yangon - where you can see imported cars and increased traffic congestion. \u003cbr/\u003eFewer people need to travel by rickshaw and the drivers are experiencing a dip in their earnings. \u003cbr/\u003eDriver U Nyan Myint explains the financial pressures he faces. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I work as a rickshaw driver and I have to pay 1000 kyats (one US dollar) to the owner. At the end of the day, I earn 5000 or 6000 kyats (around six US Dollars). So the family survives with what I have from it. That's how we survive,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003eHe also says an increase in car traffic has made his job more dangerous. \u003cbr/\u003e\"It's more difficult than before, that we have to drive the rickshaw among the cars. But as we have to earn to survive, we have to risk doing that even it is dangerous. Especially in the morning, we have to earn at least 3000 kyats (three US dollars) to buy food for the family,\" he explains.\u003cbr/\u003e\"In the evening, we get money sometimes like 2000 kyats (two US dollars) but sometimes we only get 1000 kyats (one US dollar). So we try to get money in the morning.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut despite the challenges, he says it's a job he has to do. \u003cbr/\u003e\"If there was no more rickshaw work, I would work in hard labour on the construction sites as I can get 3000 or 4000 kyats (three to four US dollars) per day,\" says U Nyan Myint.\u003cbr/\u003eMany rickshaw drivers are said to be working illegally - without a licence. \u003cbr/\u003eFew of them own their own rickshaws, with most renting - from owners like U Thein Myint. \u003cbr/\u003eBut even he is feeling the threat of financial insecurity. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Now it's not very good business to own rickshaws, as there are many of them (drivers) without a license. So I have to collect the owner fees every day from the drivers, otherwise I will be in debt. That's our difficulty,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003eAged just 19, Si Thu is barely out of his teens.\u003cbr/\u003eHe rides a rickshaw to help his family survive financially. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I have three (other) family members, my father, my mother, me and my brother. There are financial difficulties in the family and I have to work as a rickshaw driver,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003eSi Thu has brought his rickshaw to mechanic U Kyaw Oo's workshop to fix a tyre. \u003cbr/\u003eU Kyaw Oo says that new materials means that today's rickshaws are better than before. \u003cbr/\u003e\"This old wheel is easily broken and this new iron wheel is stronger and difficult to break. This new wheel is the new model. There are not many differences. The others are normal,\" he explains. \u003cbr/\u003eRickshaw driver Aung San Lin says the unpredictable nature of the business means that he doesn't have a steady income. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says the cost of living is increasing and he can not pay all his expenses every month. \u003cbr/\u003e\"It's not an easy job because I don't have a normal income. Sometimes I have more, but sometimes less. It's even worse in this kind of rainy season. Mostly I don't earn enough money. It's only enough to eat for a day. There is no extra money for this. Sometimes I am even in debt,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003eDaw Khin Hnin Yi says that rickshaws can enter some alleyways that are impossible for taxis. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Near around here, it's not convenient to take a taxi. They can't enter into some small streets. If I have to go further, we take the bus.
