Close of steps with memorial tiling\u003cbr/\u003eOver 1,200 different species of orchids grow in Mexico, but until recently there has been no national collection.\u003cbr/\u003eBut now, thanks to an American immigrant, the country has its own Botanical Gardens devoted to preserving this national treasure.\u003cbr/\u003eOrchids grow abundantly in Mexico, luxuriating in the lush climate.\u003cbr/\u003eFound mainly in the tropical regions of the Americas, Asia and Africa, orchids are one of the largest families of flowering plants on the planet.\u003cbr/\u003eMexico is home to over 1,200 different species, but until recently there has been no official place to bring them together.\u003cbr/\u003eOn a visit to western Mexico in 2004, American immigrant Robert Price was so seduced by the biodiversity of the Puerto Vallarta region that he was inspired to do something about it:\u003cbr/\u003e\"We are in a very, very important area of biodiversity here in western Mexico, that has hundreds of species of orchids, hundreds of species of different native trees and other plants, important plants. And so it is a very important area botanically, in the botanical world, of plants where people want to know more about these plants, and study them in this kind of environment.\"\u003cbr/\u003eOut of a job and looking around for any excuse to stay on in the area that he had fallen in love with, Price started studying the botanical riches of Puerto Vallarta - especially the orchids.\u003cbr/\u003eThere were efforts by Guadalajara University to study this rich biodiversity, but no natural home.\u003cbr/\u003ePrice set out on a mission to build a place to study and propagate the area''s plant life, founding the Puerto Vallarta Botanical Gardens:\u003cbr/\u003e\"Somehow this idea for a botanical garden got into my head, and it wouldn''t leave my head. And the next thing I knew I was on the internet looking at botanical gardens all around the world, studying the model of botanical gardens - what they did, how they operated, how they made money, how they could exist.\"\u003cbr/\u003eWith the help of a loan from his mother, they purchased an empty plot of land to build his dream.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Puerto Vallarta Botanical Gardens is located high in the Sierra Madre mountains, 1,300 feet above sea level. The gardens are in a unique tropical dry forest ecosystem.\u003cbr/\u003eLocated 12 miles (20 kilometres) south of Vallarta''s downtown, these 20 acres (8 hectare) of garden are now home to a growing collection of more than 3,000 different plants, including one of the most important orchid collections in Mexico.\u003cbr/\u003eKeeper and garden director Jesus Reyes originally approached Price looking for a construction job.  Now he is filled with awe and wonder at the everyday miracle of growing orchids:\u003cbr/\u003e\"It is an incredible feeling, from my point of view. When growing in the wild, from about 100 million orchid seeds, just 1 will grow up to adult age.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe garden land used to be a cattle grazing with big problems of erosion due to deforestation 30 years ago. But, little by little, the team made it grow and flourish.\u003cbr/\u003eReyes used to be an IT student but, having worked with the orchids, decided to finish school and dedicate himself to a new career as garden keeper and director.\u003cbr/\u003eThe garden has a wide variety of different kinds of flowers, plants and trees.\u003cbr/\u003eNative woodland is being reinstated. Over 1,000 mountain pine, mahogany and tababuia trees have already been planted and indigenous oak species, grown from acorns, are building up a Mexican Oak Collection.\u003cbr/\u003eTo finance the nonprofit project the founders made it a tourist attraction, producing items for sale including vanilla, a type of orchid, and plant essences and extracts. The gardens also offer educational walks through the grounds, a restaurant, bird watching tours and statuary making.\u003cbr/\u003eVisitors are also encouraged to enjoy a refreshing dip in the crystal clear Rio Los Horcones.\u003cbr/\u003eBut it''s all about the plant life.\u003cbr/\u003eFor Robert Price the dream continues to grow:\u003cbr/\u003e\"Our big dream here at the Vallarta Botanical Gardens it''s to build this new conservatory here for the national collection of Mexican orchids. To have a national collection worthy of the over 1200 species that are found in Mexico.\"\u003cbr/\u003eVisitors can also help with funding by buying a decorated tile inscription recording their visit.\u003cbr/\u003eOpened in 2005 the Vallarta Botanical Gardens is now registered as a unit for conservation, management and the sustainable use of wildlife, building relations with both national
