Wide shot of rally\u003cbr/\u003eThe main Palestinian parties held huge rallies throughout the West Bank and Gaza Strip on Monday, in the final days before Wednesday's elections.\u003cbr/\u003eTop Hamas officials on Monday launched blistering verbal attacks on Israel but left the door open to negotiations, in a mixed message aimed at shoring up support on the last day of campaigning for this week's Palestinian elections.\u003cbr/\u003eCandidates from the ruling Fatah movement wrapped up their campaign by joining hundreds of supporters on a pilgrimage to Yasser Arafat's home in Gaza, hoping to transform the memory of the iconic leader into crucial votes.\u003cbr/\u003eRecent polls show Hamas militants, sworn to Israel's destruction, gaining ground against Fatah in their first legislative run. \u003cbr/\u003eTwo days before Wednesday's balloting, the race for the 132-seat Palestinian parliament was too close to call.\u003cbr/\u003eBut one pollster said Fatah appears to be making a last-minute surge, with undecided voters largely favouring Fatah over Hamas. \u003cbr/\u003eAcross Gaza and the West Bank, Palestinians plastered posters on walls and electrical poles, strung up banners and cruised the streets with loudspeakers, trying to drum up support.\u003cbr/\u003eHamas has won over voters with a platform stressing clean government and an end to Fatah's corruption. \u003cbr/\u003eWith many Palestinians weary after five years of fighting with Israel, the group has played down its violent ideology, though it says it remains committed to armed struggle.\u003cbr/\u003eThe mixed signals were evident in comments made by Hamas leaders on Monday.\u003cbr/\u003eThe group's exiled supreme leader, Khaled Mashaal, ruled out talks with Israel. \u003cbr/\u003eBut Mahmoud Zahar, a top Hamas candidate in Gaza, said the group might be willing to negotiate through a third party.\u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking at a rally in Gaza City, he said \"if the Israelis have any offer for the Palestinians, to give them their national interests, we are going to discuss (them).\"\u003cbr/\u003eAt a time when the corruption-tainted Fatah has been unable to take control of lawless Palestinian streets, Hamas has won the confidence of voters with its image of incorruptibility and its provision of health, education and welfare services. \u003cbr/\u003ePollsters have predicted that turnout will top 85 percent, with voters energised by having a first real alternative to Fatah. \u003cbr/\u003eHamas did not participate in the last parliamentary election in 1996.\u003cbr/\u003eThe small Islamic Jihad militant group on Monday urged Palestinians to boycott the vote, but the call wasn't expected to have an impact.\u003cbr/\u003eHamas' participation has created friction with Israel and the U.S., but Abbas hopes the group will tame its positions by joining the political process. \u003cbr/\u003eHamas has not yet said whether it would join the government or lead the opposition, where it would be under less pressure to abandon its anti-Israel ideology.\u003cbr/\u003eThe U.S. advocates the spread of democratic elections in the Mideast, and did not pressure Abbas to block Hamas from the race. But because it considers Hamas to be a terrorist organization, and has said it will not deal with Hamas members who join the Palestinian
