But those perceptions are old now and we are very much moving on and we're very confident in that because we really believe we have so much to offer people that is going to be really exciting for them to see and to do.\" \u003cbr/\u003eIn the last ten years, for example, the docklands areas of Belfast alone received about 3.6 billion pounds sterling ($6 billion) in investment. \u003cbr/\u003eWhile the boom has recently slowed thanks to the global economic recession, Northern Ireland's economy is still performing quite well, helped in no small part by the large numbers of foreign tourists visiting the province.\u003cbr/\u003eTom Hartley is the former lord mayor of Belfast and a Sinn Fein councillor.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says that visitor numbers have increased and Northern Ireland's troubled past is ironically becoming one of its biggest selling points. \u003cbr/\u003eHartley says that many tourists come to the province to learn about its troubled history and to visit many of the places that once appeared on their TV news screens.\u003cbr/\u003eAndrew Miller a tourist from Los Angeles, California says the city is surprising.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Belfast is beautiful - I mean I had very little understanding of the situation here and what the city was going to be like so it was kind of a surprise for me when I first came but I really like it. Northern Ireland tourism industry is the growth of the luxury high-end of the market.\u003cbr/\u003eFive-star hotels like the Merchant Hotel in Belfast - with rooms costing as much as 450 pounds sterling ($800) per night - are doing brisk business despite the recession. \u003cbr/\u003eThe room occupancy rate is an impressive 90% with visitors from the Republic of Ireland - who are looking for luxury at a price they can afford - up 100% this year alone. \u003cbr/\u003ePetra Wolsey is the Merchant's marketing manager. \u003cbr/\u003eLast year tourism contributed almost 363 million pounds
