Shonia at home with her parents, camera pushes into Shonia smiling \u003cbr/\u003eAn Indian couple living in Britain are hoping to take their eight-year-old daughter to China for revolutionary treatment for cerebral palsy.\u003cbr/\u003eKishor Tahiliani and his wife, Priti, believe that stem cell treatment will help their daughter, Vaishnavi, known as Shonia, to lead a more normal life.\u003cbr/\u003eShonia Tahiliani is eight years old and suffers from cerebral palsy. \u003cbr/\u003eUnable to speak, walk or even sit unaided, she attends a school for children with special needs in the southern coastal town of Bournemouth, where she lives with her parents Kishor and Priti. \u003cbr/\u003eHer father Kishor says that she is a special little girl, who enjoys a special bond with her mother. \u003cbr/\u003eKishor says that Shonia communicates through her body language and can convey her wants and needs very effectively. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says that due to lack of oxygen when she was born, Shonia suffered birth asphyxia, which led to cerebral palsy meaning that she is \"unable to talk or move freely.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut despite her disabilities Shonia can react to her surroundings and various stimuli and responds to the people around her, showing joy or frustration. \u003cbr/\u003eHer father says that she likes attending the Victoria Centre school for children with special needs and her enjoyment is reflected by the frequent smiles on her face. \u003cbr/\u003eNow thanks to a generous donation by a local businessman the Tahiliani's are preparing to travel to Beijing with their little girl, where they hope that stem cell treatment will improve her mobility and perhaps even her speech.  \u003cbr/\u003eShonia's parents found out about the treatment on the internet. \u003cbr/\u003eThe treatment is not yet available in the UK but Tiantan Puhua Neurosurgical Hospital in Beijing says that they have made a breakthrough in treating cerebral palsy. They inject stem cells from umbilical cords of healthy babies into the spinal cord fluid of a patient with cerebral palsy, over a two-month period. \u003cbr/\u003eThe stem cells are carried directly to the brain where it is thought that they develop into new nerve cells and repair brain damage. \u003cbr/\u003eUntil recently there has been no medical treatment for cerebral palsy. \u003cbr/\u003eThe hospital says that similar treatment has already helped 19-year-old Gabor Bocskai from Hungary to walk, sit up, swim, concentrate for longer, see better and speak.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever similar treatment is not yet available in the United Kingdom or the United States where requirements for medical testing and trials are said to be more rigorous. \u003cbr/\u003eDr. Robin Lovell-Badge is the Head of Stem Cell Biology and Developmental Genetics, at the UK's National Institute for Medical Research \u003cbr/\u003eA sceptic of the Chinese treatment he explains the procedure, but adds that Chinese doctors are also investigating using stem cells from the brains of aborted foetuses for this kind of treatment. \u003cbr/\u003eBack home with her parents, Shonia's mother Priti says that her favourite thing is listening to Bollywood music and recognises her favourite songs and laughs a lot. \u003cbr/\u003eKishor says that they are realistic about the treatment and do not expect miracles, but they hope that Shonia will experience some kind of improvement in her ability to communicate and be able to control her limbs better. \u003cbr/\u003eThe treatment also involves two to three months of intensive physiotherapy and speech therapy. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever Dr. Robin Lovell-Badge says there is little medical evidence to support the claims by Tiantan Puhua Neurosurgical Hospital, but he understands the desire of the parents to hope that something can be done for their child.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe Tahilianis hope to
