The lack of tree coverage over large parts of the countryside regularly increases damage during the rainy season.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Red Cross is working together with DPRK authorities, the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Land and Environment Protection, to plant trees in fifty communities around the country.\u003cbr/\u003eThis spring's programme should see four million new seedling trees planted in the DPRK, according to the Red Cross.\u003cbr/\u003eVolunteers run up a barren hillside to plant new trees in the countryside about one hour's drive outside the capital Pyongyang.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is an area that has suffered from flood damage in past years, and has been selected for reforestation by DPRK authorities and the Red Cross.\u003cbr/\u003eLarge areas of the DPRK lost forests as a result of chopping down trees for fuel, and clearing land for farming.\u003cbr/\u003eIn recent years, the DPRK government has been working together with the International Red Cross and the country's national Red Cross Society, to try to grow back forest cover on barren hillsides.\u003cbr/\u003eThe hope is that new forests will mean trees and roots holding the earth together, so that it is less easy to be washed away in heavy rain.\u003cbr/\u003eThis tree planting initiative is just one part of the community based disaster risk reduction programme that the Red Cross promotes in the DPRK.\u003cbr/\u003eAs well as reforestation, the programme includes reinforcement of river banks, the construction of dams and dykes, reservoirs, and evacuation bridges to help local communities when flooding cuts off essential facilities from normal access.\u003cbr/\u003eIgor Dmitruyk, head of the International Federation of the Red Cross in DPRK, emphasises that tree planting is part of the overall project aimed at helping people cope with natural disasters:\u003cbr/\u003e\"All of the elements of this programme, they are closely linked to each other, and each and every element can have strong influence on each other. Tree planting is important work, to preserve the land of the country, and for the future of the country,\" Kim says.\u003cbr/\u003eInternational Red Cross representatives in Pyongyang say that tree planting programmes have been successful in the DPRK, with good growth seen in new planting over the past few years.\u003cbr/\u003eThe tree planting, and disaster risk reduction programmes overall, rely on close cooperation between the International Red Cross, DPRK Ministries, and communities across the country.\u003cbr/\u003eLocal authorities are responsible for finding the labour to implement the projects. DPRK authorities at a ministerial level provide technical assistance and heavy machinery. The International Red Cross provides cement, steel bars and fuel for construction.\u003cbr/\u003eNorway has contributed funding to support these projects, the International Red Cross
