We've had excellent meetings today. We've discussed all aspects of the current situation in the Middle East, particularly the situation for the peace process. All of us have been emphasising the necessity of having a comprehensive perspective on the peace process. I will continue my discussions here in Damascus today with the foreign minister and his colleagues, other ministerial colleagues, and I will then proceed to Damascus - sorry, to Beirut - in order to discuss the same issues with my Lebanese counterparts. I will now take a few questions.\"\u003cbr/\u003eQ: Do you expect a revival of the peace process in the region in the near future, particularly on the Syrian-Lebanese tracks?)\u003cbr/\u003eA: The situation in the Middle East is at the moment so that there are potential opportunities. We have Palestinian elections coming up, the government of Israel are pushing forward their pullout from Gaza. This gives new opportunities on the Palestinian-Israeli track. President Assad has reiterated to me today that he has an outstretched hand to his Israeli counterparts and that he is willing to go to the table without conditions. This is also very encouraging because we in the United Nations do not believe that there will be a lasting peace unless there is a comprehensive peace. We have to address all tracks of the Middle East peace process. However, we cannot do everything at the same time. We have to proceed meticulously.\"\u003cbr/\u003eEnds\u003cbr/\u003eSyrian President Bashar Assad is ready to resume peace talks with Israel \"without conditions,\" a top UN envoy said Wednesday.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was not immediately clear if Damascus has dropped its demand that talks would resume from the point where they broke off with Israel four years ago.\u003cbr/\u003eSyrian peace negotiations with Israel collapsed in 2000 when Israel offered to withdraw from most of Syria's Golan Heights, a strategic plateau that Israel captured during the 1967 Mideast War and later annexed.\u003cbr/\u003eSyria has repeatedly said that it wants the entire Golan returned in exchange for a peace deal with Israel.\u003cbr/\u003e\"President Assad has reiterated to me today that he has an outstretched hand to his Israeli counterparts and that he is willing to go to the table without conditions,\" the UN Mideast envoy Terje Roed-Larsen, told a news conference following talks with the Syrian president and his foreign minister, Farouk al-Sharaa.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This is also very encouraging because the United Nations does not believe that there will be a lasting peace unless there is a comprehensive peace,\" Roed-Larsen said of Assad's remarks. \"We have to address all the tracks of the Middle East peace process.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAsked by reporters what he meant by Assad being willing to resume talks \"without conditions,\" Roed-Larsen said that he could not speak on Assad's behalf and was only conveying the president's message.\u003cbr/\u003eSince taking office in July 2000 following the death of his father, Assad has said Syria is ready to resume peace talks with Israel, but he has insisted they begin where they left off in 2000.\u003cbr/\u003eThere was no immediate Syrian comment on Roed-Larsen's statement.\u003cbr/\u003eSyria's official news agency, SANA, did not report such remarks had been made by Assad, but said his talks with Roed-Larsen centered on the Middle East peace process and the need to implement international resolutions to achieve regional peace and stability.\u003cbr/\u003eIsraeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has previously rebuffed Assad's offers to resume talks, saying Syria must first expel militant Palestinian groups based in Damascus and rein in Hezbollah guerrillas along the Lebanon-Israel border.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Israel, Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom discussed Syrian-Israeli peace moves, but it was unclear if was referring to Roed-Larsen's comments in Damascus.\u003cbr/\u003eShalom told Israeli Army radio that about 1½ years ago Syria had approached Israel \"and we held some sort of talks but this was in the shadow of the war in Iraq when they (Syria) were under great pressure to close the border between them and Iraq.\"\u003cbr/\u003eShalom said the contacts later \"dwindled\" before being \"blocked,\" despite Assad saying on several occasions that he wanted to resume negotiations with Israel, which Syria remains technically at war with.\u003cbr/\u003eAn Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman, Mark Regev, said there was \"nothing new\" in Assad's remarks as conveyed by Roed-Larsen.\u003cbr/\u003eRoed-Larsen also briefed Assad on UN efforts to help the Palestinians and their national authority overcome current difficulties, SANA said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe UN envoy recently said there is a new opportunity for Middle East peace, citing recent statements from US President George W. Bush, the new Palestinian leadership emerging in the wake of Yasser Arafat's Nov. 11 death and the Israeli and British prime ministers.\u003cbr/\u003eIn June, the UN Security Council voted unanimously to extend the 1,050-strong UN peacekeeping mission along the Israeli-Syrian border for six months.\u003cbr/\u003eThe force was established in 1974, following the 1973 Yom Kippur war, to monitor
