Tilt from fake loose wires to robot head\u003cbr/\u003eRio de Janeiro is preparing for carnival time.\u003cbr/\u003eOver the course of two evenings 4000 dancers from fourteen top Escola-de-samba (samba school) groups will be battling it out to be declared this year's champions. \u003cbr/\u003eNearly 30 thousand people are involved in the production of the carnival parades. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's estimated each group spends between one and five million dollars (US) per year on the event. And this year the team behind a huge lizard is hoping to get into the record books. \u003cbr/\u003eWith Rio's annual carnival less than a week away (starts Feb 17) everyone from drummers to dancers to engineers are perfecting their contributions to the intensely competitive show. \u003cbr/\u003eWeekend rehearses are a must in the months leading up to the carnival. \u003cbr/\u003eDancers will follow a choreography that reproduces the mechanical movements of a Hollywood robot. \u003cbr/\u003eDressed in T-shirts, participants go through the choreography designed by the carnival artist.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is also a chance for the rhythm section known here as \"bateria\" to rehearse the beat that is characteristic of each samba school. \u003cbr/\u003eOne hundred drummers are needed to create a beat for upto four thousand dancers. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Queen of the Bateria is always there to inspire the drummers. \u003cbr/\u003eShe is here today in full costume.\u003cbr/\u003eUsually a well-known Brazilian Soap opera artist or a famous model, she needs to be a master in the movements of samba. \u003cbr/\u003eHer display is one of the points by which the samba school will be judged in the contest, reflecting also on the quality of the drumming.\u003cbr/\u003eBack in the warehouses in work on the carnival floats (vehicles) begins early. \u003cbr/\u003eNew carnival warehouses were built by Rio's municipality last year and handed to the top Samba Schools in the new City of Samba at the dock side area of the city.\u003cbr/\u003eBetween September and February work becomes more intense as the carnival nears. \u003cbr/\u003eAbout 200 people work in each warehouse making the float cars that will carry the theme each group will display through dance and music.\u003cbr/\u003eLeading the whole effort is the \"Carnavalesco\" or Carnival Designer, who proposes the original idea, and carries it through to the end of the parade.\u003cbr/\u003eAlex de Sousa, is the \"Carnavalesco\" for \"Mocidade Independente\" samba school. \u003cbr/\u003eHe has designed the parade float (vehicle) and created the original drawings. \u003cbr/\u003eHis parade float is inspired by the futuristic film \"Metropolis\" by Fritz Lang. \u003cbr/\u003eThe main float car is based on a large industrial machine shown in the 1930's movie. \u003cbr/\u003eDancers dressed as industrial workers will be posed in several  parts of the machine. \u003cbr/\u003eOne person will be inside the big wheel. \u003cbr/\u003eAt this early stage many float cars are covered in plastic, both to preserve the materials from dust and to keep the design secret.\u003cbr/\u003eThe moving parts of the floats will be both operated both manually and mechanically.\u003cbr/\u003eThis pressure gauge will require hand movements from the inside. \u003cbr/\u003eA mechanic will be operating the electric motor that elevates the monster head, which will emerge from the machine in the middle of the parade. \u003cbr/\u003eWork on the carnival designs starts in September the year before,  when last year's float cars are stripped leaving only an extended metal chassis built on top of what used to be a city bus. \u003cbr/\u003eJose Luis Santos is the mechanic in charge, and he has to make sure this vehicle makes it to the parade and back. \u003cbr/\u003eMechanical problems are to be avoided at all costs.\u003cbr/\u003eThe gears are reduced to first and reverse, to avoid possible mistakes by the driver. Using second or third can destroy the gear box and stop the parade. \u003cbr/\u003eEach of these cars will take on excessive weight, about fifteen metric tons. \u003cbr/\u003eMany people will be dancing on top of the structure, so the suspension needs to be modified and the springs removed.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the warehouse belonging the Vila Isabel Samba School who were last year's competition champions they are also putting the finishing touches to their parade floats. \u003cbr/\u003eCid Carvalho, the Vila Isabel Samba School's carnival designer says this year he is trying to break a record: the greatest amount of moving parts and lights ever taken to the parade. \u003cbr/\u003eThis is a rigidly competitive parade in which every group tries its best to impress the judges. \u003cbr/\u003eBesides the content and quality of the music, the performance of the dancers, the originality of the theme, and the beauty of the floats all count.\u003cbr/\u003eEight people will be inside the Vila Isabel's giant lizard during the parade: the driver, an electrician and six others operating legs and eye movement. \u003cbr/\u003eMost of the people who are employed by the samba schools work on the costumes. \u003cbr/\u003eAn average of four thousand dancers per school participate in the parade. \u003cbr/\u003eAt least fifty thousand costumes will be made to be used during two hours, to be discarded briefly after the parade. \u003cbr/\u003eMany tons of glittery plastic, fabrics, even mirror pieces, are used and pasted onto the gear that will be worn during the Carnival. \u003cbr/\u003eHundreds of professional seamstresses work long hours here making sure everyone gets their costume.\u003cbr/\u003eRobot costumes will parade along Fritz Lang's Metropolis machine at the Mocidade Independente Samba School. \u003cbr/\u003eThis is but one of more than 30 different costumes this school will display. \u003cbr/\u003eOn the day of the parade, robots and dancers will be wearing full costume while the float cars parade in between. \u003cbr/\u003eMillions of Brazilians who will be watching the parade on television and cheering for their favourite samba school.
