Close up Jesus' face\u003cbr/\u003eAfter scraping away layers of grime from a religious banner, experts in central Italy have discovered a signature they believe to have come from a teenage Raphael, a historian said on Thursday.\u003cbr/\u003eGiordana Benazzi, who was in charge of the three-year restoration, said the image of Christ was most likely painted in 1498-99, when the Renaissance master was about 15 or 16 years old.\u003cbr/\u003eThe banner had been kept in a church in the Umbrian city of Gubbio until three years ago, when it underwent a restoration. \u003cbr/\u003eUntil then, art historians had attributed it to a second-rate painter from Gubbio.\u003cbr/\u003eThe linen banner is two metres (6.5 feet) high and shows a risen Christ between a kneeling St. Ubaldo, patron saint of Gubbio, and St. Francis of Assisi.\u003cbr/\u003eBenazzi, a top art official in the Umbria region, said that the first two letters of the signature - R and U - stand for Raphael Urbinas, representing the artist's Latin name.\u003cbr/\u003eShe said that cross studies on other works by Raphael in the same period and the same use of some materials used helped confirm the attribution.\u003cbr/\u003eThe banner, which was used in religious processions, was in poor condition when the restoration work began.\u003cbr/\u003eCorriere della Sera newspaper put the discovery on its front page and displayed photos of the banner, painted in vivid purples, reds and greens.\u003cbr/\u003eSt. Ubaldo holds a chalice to catch blood spilling from Christ's side.\u003cbr/\u003eOn the right hand side, a kneeling St. Frances of Assisi lifts his hands to display his stigmata, wounds resembling Christ's crucifixion injuries.\u003cbr/\u003eRestorers were struck by the refined depiction of Christ's legs and other details that they claimed could only be made by a maestro, the paper said.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile the general style is not as refined as Raphael's work would later become, some elements in the banner are similar to Raphael's later productions, Benazzi said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe expert added that two documents - one from 1502 and another one from 1505 - indicate Raphael might have been in Gubbio when the work was painted.\u003cbr/\u003eRestorers are still cleaning the reverse side of the banner, which they say will take around two years.\u003cbr/\u003eOnce the restoration
