Pan view as Bush walks away (Reporters asking him why now?)\u003cbr/\u003eIn a new push for peace, United States President George Bush urged Israel on Thursday to end its military offensive against Palestinians and called on Arab nations to do more to crack down on terrorists. \u003cbr/\u003eHe ordered Secretary of State Colin Powell to the region to carry the new message.\u003cbr/\u003eBush told reporters that the storms of violence could not go on and that enough was enough.\u003cbr/\u003eThe US president has faced mounting criticism with each new suicide bombing against Israelis and military response from Israel. \u003cbr/\u003eHe has been accused of doing too much and, by other critics, not enough. \u003cbr/\u003eThursday's speech was designed to prod both Israel and Palestinians to take tough steps toward peace.\u003cbr/\u003eTo Israel, Bush called for a halt to incursions into Palestinian-controlled areas. \u003cbr/\u003eSenior advisors, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Bush believed the assaults could eventually undermine Israel's security by inciting more violence and even spread the conflict beyond the Israel-Palestinian borders.\u003cbr/\u003eStanding by Powell in the White House Rose Garden, Bush urged Israel to stop the building of settlements in Palestinian areas and show a respect for the dignity of the Palestinian people.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said he was speaking as a committed friend of Israel, out of concern for its long-term security.\u003cbr/\u003eTo the Palestinians, Bush restated his warning that nations that help terrorists would be treated the same as terrorists. \u003cbr/\u003eAides said he was frustrated and disappointed with Arafat's inability to stem terrorism, and was hoping the Arab leaders would fill the void.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said of Arafat: \"The situation in which he finds himself today is largely of his own making.
