Wide of house\u003cbr/\u003eChina marked the first anniversary of last year's devastating Sichuan earthquake on Tuesday, as the struggle to rebuild vied with new threats from swine flu and economic woes.\u003cbr/\u003eThe magnitude-7.9 temblor, the deadliest earthquake to hit China in decades, toppled villages and razed portions of Sichuan and two neighbouring provinces, leaving nearly 90-thousand people dead or missing.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother five (m) million were left homeless.\u003cbr/\u003eA year on and many in the hardest hit areas are still struggling to return to a semblance of normality. \u003cbr/\u003eChen Digui, a farmer in Beichuan County, has a story that is unfortunately far too common in this region of China.\u003cbr/\u003eChen, a 63 years old is from the Qiang ethnic minority group, whose ancestral homeland in these parts have virtually been wiped out by the quake.\u003cbr/\u003eThe quake destroyed his house and claimed the life of his mother. \u003cbr/\u003eChen has done better than most managing to scrape together enough money to begin rebuilding a home for eight members of his extended family.\u003cbr/\u003eTired of living in cramped refugee camps, he and his sons borrowed around 200-thousand RMB (approximately 30 thousand US dollars) to build a new house.\u003cbr/\u003eThey received five-thousand RMB (750 US dollars) in government subsidy. \u003cbr/\u003eIn his struggle to pay the bills, Chen sometimes works in construction site, earning as little as 15 US dollars a day.\u003cbr/\u003eChen says the pressure to repay the loan is a constant worry.\u003cbr/\u003eChen's neighbours too are busy rebuilding their homes and some have started to grow crops again in the hope of returning to their old way of life.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile the government continues to fund reconstruction, the devastation to the local economy and the fallout from the global economic crisis has cast long term doubts on whether or not the region will ever fully recover. \u003cbr/\u003eChen's wife, Yang Shuzhen narrowly escaped from earthquake by hiding in the mountains when the earthquake occurred. \u003cbr/\u003eShe says local authorities are failing to properly put in place the central government's initiatives and the the victims of the quake lack a public voice.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We don't have anybody to speak up for us\" she said.\u003cbr/\u003eChinese President Hu Jintao was expected to attend commemorations in the quake zone on Tuesday and a grand ceremony was set for the epicentre of the quake in the destroyed town of Beichuan at shortly after 2:00 pm local time (0600 GMT), when the quake struck.\u003cbr/\u003eArea residents held private memorial services on Monday, the day before their loved ones died in keeping with local tradition.\u003cbr/\u003eChen said he feels far removed from the services and instead will visit the grave of his mother on Tuesday.\u003cbr/\u003eShe was in a neighbour's home when the quake levelled the house last year.\u003cbr/\u003eAll photos and personal mementos of Chen's mother were also lost in the quake.\u003cbr/\u003eChen now just hopes that life will return to normal
