Friday.\u003cbr/\u003eRussia remained on the blacklist but was spared threatened sanctions after enacting laws to counter money laundering.\u003cbr/\u003eThe announcement came at the end of a three-day conference by the 31-member task force, held at the headquarters of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (O-E-C-D).\u003cbr/\u003eThe Financial Action Task Force on Money Laundering (F-A-T-F) said in June that Russia, the Philippines and the Pacific Island of Nauru, the world's smallest independent republic, had made \"inadequate progress\" in combating money laundering and gave them until the end of September to crack down or face sanctions.\u003cbr/\u003eSuch sanctions could include getting banks to impose tight restrictions on countries before doing business there, or warning international companies away from them.\u003cbr/\u003eMoney laundering involves exchanging or investing funds earned from illegal activities such as prostitution, gambling and drug trafficking in order to conceal their source and make the money appear legitimate.\u003cbr/\u003eThe OECD task force was created in 1989 by the Group of Seven industrialized nations and is
