Woman dancing in the aisle
As the clock ticks down on one of the most remarkable presidential contests in U.S. history, the African-American population is energised in ways not seen in decades.
138 years after the post-Civil War 15th Amendment of the US Constitution granted blacks the right to vote - a right which took nearly another century and the Civil Rights movement to fully realise - an African-American has the first true shot at winning the White House.
And the nation's black population, particularly in key swing states, is gearing up, hoping to be a potent political force come Election Day.
At Friendship Baptist Church in Toledo, Ohio, the enthusiasm for the political race is palpable.
During a recent Sunday service, usually reserved strictly for religious worship, the election - and the need to get out the vote - was at the top of the agenda.
Church organisations and pastors are prohibited by federal law from supporting a political candidate or party from the pulpit.
But in black churches across Ohio and America, they don't have to.
A poll conducted by the University of Cincinnati earlier this month showed 94 percent of blacks in Ohio said they would support Senator Barack Obama in November's election.
In other words, if church organisers just do their part in registering and turning out their congregation's vote, that could mean good news for Obama.
Tina Lawrence, who's led a voter registration effort at Friendship Baptist, said the excitement this election season is unparalleled.
"The fact that we've had the first you know, serious African American candidate..has, you know, added to the excitement and the interest, I think, especially from our community," said Lawrence.
That excitement and interest in the election this season is underscored by the historic voter registration numbers among blacks.
But many congregants of Friendship Baptist insist their passion for electing Obama is less about race and more about a serious desire for change.
"I think this is not an election on race this time. Bush won the state of Ohio in 2004 by just 2 percentage points. A large turnout by new black voters in Ohio or any other swing state could potentially redraw the election map and propel Obama to victory.
"Nationally, we saw that blacks made up about ten percent of the election in 2004. Based on the higher levels of engagement, that may go up a point or two, which doesn't seem impressive, but in a state like Ohio or Virginia, a point or two could make all the difference," said Doherty.
While the Obama camp is optimistic about increasing the black turnout, it's also cautious.
After all, campaigns have been excited in the past about registering large numbers of blacks to vote, only to be disappointed by the turnout on Election Day.
Another thorny issue has been the sustained political wrangling in Ohio over alleged voter
registration discrepancies.
The Republican Party has filed numerous legal challenges questioning the status of about 200,000 newly registered voters in Ohio, warning about the potential for voter fraud.
The U.S.Supreme Court has already said the GOP didn't have the standing to bring one case against the Democratic Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner and Democrats have accused Republicans of employing scare tactics to frighten away new voters.
Some Obama supporters also fear a strong black showing will be more important than ever, just to counteract the votes Obama may lose from white voters who can't bring themselves to cast a ballot for a black man.
"I think that's just the reality of the United States. There will be people who vote against their own vested interest just because he's an African-American, that's sad really," said Ohio voter and African-American Paula Stewart.
Kathryn Merriman, another Obama supporter, echoed that concern. "That's been my fear from the very beginning. It's a racist nation. And it does worry me, but I'm hopeful," she said.
Pollster Carroll Doherty said Merriman might have reason to be hopeful this time around.
"In the end, the negatives
