He explains that the headcount is both a legal necessity and vital for global animal databases like ISIS (International Species Information System).
This information provides the basis of the zoo's breeding programme.
Counting some of the London Zoo's 650 plus species is easy. There are only two lions for example - hard to miss.
But some of the tasks are not for the squeamish: who really wants to spend a few hours determining if the population of 612 cockroaches has grown in the last 12 months?
The B.U.G.S or (Biodiversity Underpinning Global Survival) house is the biodiversity and conservation exhibit and displays more than 140 species.
Among them are fruit beetles, flower beetles, tarantulas and various species of locusts.
B.U.G.S is also home to the zoo's Invertebrate Conservation Unit, one of the largest facilities for conservation breeding of invertebrates in the world.
Birds at the zoo are among the more colourful creatures on display, like these eastern white pelicans.
They live mostly in Southern Europe, Central Asia and South Africa.
The leathery pouch beneath the beak can hold up to fourteen litres of fish and water.
Flamingos are easily identifiable, colourful wading birds which often form large flocks of up to a million birds.
They inhabit a wide variety of freshwater and saline habitats, particularly salt lakes, estuaries and lagoons in South and Central America and the Caribbean.
Flamingos are often seen standing on one leg. This stance is thought to keep the hidden leg warm amongst their feathers.
On very hot days at London Zoo the flamingos can be seen standing on both legs.
There are two types of penguins at London Zoo: Black footed Penguins and Rockhopper penguins.
Black footed Penguins have about 70 short stiff feathers per square inch.
This species is threatened by oil pollution and reduction of food supply due to overfishing. Black footed penguins live on the beaches and coastal areas of South Africa and Namibia.
Rockhopper Penguins are the smallest of the crested penguins. They are noisy, feisty and protective of their young.
Rockhopper penguins live on the rocky coasts of the Sub-Antarctic islands and they eat fish and krill.
Mick Tiley is the Team Leader of Birds at London Zoo.
He explains that the penguins are a managed species in that they are often exchanged and moved around different zoos in Europe in order to prevent
