Otherwise Dole's face off could backfire.  \u003cbr/\u003eChallenger Bob Dole continues to plunge headlong into the campaign for president --  holding forth the image of an upbeat challenger to Bill Clinton.\u003cbr/\u003eBut still trailing 10 to 15 points behind Bill Clinton in public opinion polls, Dole campaign  insiders know the Sunday night debate may be their last best chance to gain badly  needed ground.\u003cbr/\u003eWorse yet, in a new poll only 20 percent say Dole might win the debate, while 70  percent have Clinton coming out on top.\u003cbr/\u003eNumbers like these have forced the Dole camp to down play expectations for the  debate.\u003cbr/\u003eEven by showing up, they say, Dole wins the debate against Clinton.\u003cbr/\u003eBut one veteran advisor to presidents says Dole must come out fighting in the debate if  he has any chance at all.\u003cbr/\u003eMarlin Fitzwater was press secretary to former President George Bush. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd he was a close adviser to Bush during the 1988 and 1992 campaign, helping to  coach candidate Bush at debate time.\u003cbr/\u003ePrepping candidates for the highly charged atmosphere of the debate is a delicate art,  he says. \u003cbr/\u003eFitzwater says Dole and his aides must go at Clinton without making Bob Dole look like  a bad guy, and that's no easy task. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"But he, because he is 20 points ahead in most of the polls, Dole has got to penetrate,  at least try to bring him down some in terms of popularity if he possibly can. That's  difficult for Senator Dole because he's often been portrayed as harsh and mean spirited  and so forth. And he's response to Saddam Hussein is now being judged pretty harshly.  He changed policy at the last minute that sent a signal of weakness.
