People walking past Buddha statue, pull out to wide of statue\u003cbr/\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eThe Taliban religious militia has completely demolished two giant statues of Buddha hewn from a cliff face in central Afghanistan, international aid workers said on Sunday, despite desperate pleas from abroad to spare the third and fifth-century relics.\u003cbr/\u003eThe destruction was ordered late last month by the Taliban, hard-line Muslims, who rule most of Afghanistan and say statues are idolatrous. \u003cbr/\u003eDespite the international outcry, the Taliban appeared on Sunday to have obliterated both statues, one of which was believed to be the world's tallest standing Buddha.\u003cbr/\u003eTaliban Foreign Minister Wakil Ahmed Muttawakil told U-N Secretary-General Kofi Annan during a meeting on Sunday in neighbouring Pakistan that there was nothing left of the statues, according to an international aid worker who attended the talks.\u003cbr/\u003eAt his own press conference, Muttawakil said the Taliban realised that the statues were part of Afghan cultural heritage but said that the decision to destroy them had been under consideration for some time. \u003cbr/\u003eHe also referred to Osama Bin Laden, who is wanted by the United States for the alleged terrorist attacks. \u003cbr/\u003eAlthough he alluded to a possible improvement in relations between his government and the United States, Muttawakil said that questions remained over any proposed trial for Bin Laden and the legal system under which it would proceed. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Pashtu/English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"We do admit that all these monuments relics were the cultural heritage of Afghanistan.
