Therefore this is not something that is very specific regarding this cognitive test, it's almost any cognitive test. And the other issue is that there were many different types of patient populations who have cognitive impairment. Patients with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) have cognitive impairment, patients with manic depression, some but not all, have cognitive impairment, patients with severe personality problems, patients with severe OCD, that's obsessive compulsive disorder, some of them also will have cognitive impairment. And there are people who are not very bright or on the low scale of normal, who also don't perform all that well in cognitive tests, and we don't really know what is specific about schizophrenia compared to these other patient populations. interactive test, based around a Virtual Reality game, gives the scientists an opportunity to test a patient's cognitive brain functions.\u003cbr/\u003ePeople who are diagnosed with schizophrenia often experience cognitive problems, relating to the mental processes of perception, memory, judgment, and reasoning. \u003cbr/\u003eA team of Israeli scientists say that a new Virtual Reality (VR) technique can help identify patients who don't identify discrepancies when presented with a virtual world where  dogs 'moo' or clouds are red. \u003cbr/\u003eTwo of the researchers involved in the project are computer scientist Dr Anna Sorkin of Hebrew University, and psychiatrist Dr Avi Peled of the Technion technological Institute, in Haifa. \u003cbr/\u003ePatients wear a set of goggles, also known as a Head Mounted Display (HMD), which gives them a three-dimensional view of their environment.\u003cbr/\u003eInside the virtual world they are confronted with unusual situations, like an upside house or a blue tree. \u003cbr/\u003eDr Anna Sorkin says subjects navigate through what appears to be a normal world, only to encounter three incoherent events of colour, location and sound.\u003cbr/\u003eOnce volunteers encounter the incoherent events, they have to indicate any anomalies.\u003cbr/\u003eThe scientists hypothesise that by using virtual reality they are able to design complex interactive tasks that can challenge subjects.\u003cbr/\u003eDr Peled says schizophrenic patients have a problem of integration between auditory and visual modalities.\u003cbr/\u003eBecause of this many are not able to detect the incoherencies.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the researchers this can help them to diagnose patients with schizophrenia.\u003cbr/\u003eDr Peled shows a situation where a subject is confronted with an image of a man playing a guitar that sounds like a trumpet.\u003cbr/\u003eDr Anna Sorkin says it's surprising how schizophrenic patients fail these simple tasks.\u003cbr/\u003eBy measuring the distortion in reality perception in schizophrenia patients, the scientists are trying to demonstrate that the virtual reality can serve as a powerful experimental tool to study complex cognitive processes. \u003cbr/\u003eDr Peled says they are trying to create a real time objective diagnosis system.\u003cbr/\u003eThe tests were carried out on healthy volunteers who spotted at least 87 per cent of the incoherencies.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile only six of the 43 volunteers with schizophrenia scored in this normal range. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever another leading Israeli psychiatrist remains sceptical about these conclusions.\u003cbr/\u003eDr Mark Weiser is the chief psychiatrist at the Chaim Sheba Medical Centre.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says some patients suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or from personality disorders, depression or who even have low intelligence  may also not recognise the anomalies presented in the VR technique. \u003cbr/\u003eThe team at Hebrew University say that although the VR technique offers extra information that will help to diagnose schizophrenic patients, they should not replace traditional diagnostic methods, which involves interviewing and observing patients to determine which of a checklist of symptoms they have. \u003cbr/\u003eThe virtual reality experiment was presented on January 29, 2008 at the Medicine Meets Virtual Reality conference in Long Beach California by Dr Daphna Weinshall, the computer scientist from the Hebrew University
