Now technology is helping trainee bell ringers perfect the skill at home.
The peal of church bells ring out across the Isle of Dogs in East London.
Christchurch is a typically English church with a tower housing eight bells. Most towers have between six and twelve heavy metal bells.
The vicar, Father Tom Pyke, is a bell ringer - or campanologist - and rings along with a band of ringers based at the church.
The ringing is done using ropes that thread up through the ceiling of the ringing chamber to the bells lodged in the tower. They turn the bells that are hung on wheels revolving backwards and then forwards with each pull.
According to Father Pyke, bells have been part of the local community for over two centuries.
"The Church, the community, all the pubs and the bells all came at the same time in the mid 19th century. So the builder who built this church William Cubitt clearly thought that bells were an important thing. And for generations they've been the way in which people have been called to worship."
Over many generations bell ringing evolved as a communal pastime with more experienced ringers teaching beginners how to handle the ropes and learn the complex patterns of change ringing.
Each bell is rung in a pre-determined order which alters in position with each round.
It takes beginners quite some time to get the hang of when to pull their bell.
In the past this required tolerance from those living within earshot of the church.
But now it is possible for newcomers to get to grips with the ringing patterns at home using their own computer.
Roger Booth, Tower Captain says that new software simulates the sound of the bells and allows those learning to take the first steps gradually on their computers until they are confident. They experience the same sense of ringing with other people.
"The advantage of the simulator software is that it allows us to teach change ringing in a whole new different way to what we have done in the past. What we can do is to break down all the individual actions and we can start off teaching people to ring one or two changes at a time. And then what we can do is gradually build that up so that eventually, people if they want to can practise ringing 5 thousand-odd changes on the simulator themselves."
This is a boon for beginners who need to ring accurately and in harmony with other ringers - be they real or virtual.
Chris Hughes, Inventor of Abel Software explains that since this is used on a computer the only thing missing from the full experience is actually pulling on the rope.
"When you are practising at home you can choose which bell you want to ring and the computer the programme will simply make the sounds of all the other bells and provide you with pictures as well. Of course you can't practise the actual pulling of the bell ropes, but you can practise all the other aspects. You can practice making the bell ring at the right point for the pattern that you are trying to learn," Hughes says.
This latest version of the simulator software allows users to see other "virtual" ringers on their computer screen.
In this way the beginner gets to grips with "rope sight", the ability to judge when you should pull in rhythm by keeping an eye on the movements of other ringers around you.
"The computer provides both the pictures and the sound which makes the ringer of the bell feel that they are ringing with real people and let's them practice just the same things. They can practice ringing at the right speed and they can practice ringing the rather complicated patterns which are the characteristic of English bell ringing" Hughes adds.
This same software can be used in church ringing towers - with the additional benefit that the actual bells are silenced so nobody is disturbed.
A sensor on the side of the bell picks up the swinging movement of the bell and triggers the software on the computer down in the ringing chamber.
This in turn brings up a line of virtual people looking as though they are going to ring the bells.
They correspond with the number of bells in the tower and projected on to a screen virtually life size.
The computer controls the pictures so as to give the appearance of a continuous video.
Booth says the advantage of this simulator is that novices learn when it is their turn to ring their bell whether in simple or more complex changes - without actually needing to have other ringers present.
"What we need to do is to break down the individual skills. So there first thing we can do with a simulator is to try and teach people to ring their bell in the right position in the sequence. So if they are ringing in second place or third place - so that's the first skill. Then the second bit is to teach them to ring their bell and just change the order slightly. And then gradually we can do more and more complicated exercises with a simulator so that they can change their position on the row on every stroke which is the real objective of change ringing."
The technology has the ringers standing with their hands in the air holding the end of the rope which they ring very accurately. The software is based on a two second video of just one ringer going through the motion of ringing the bell once.
The video-like series of graphics has been manipulated to fit with the rhythm of each of the simulated bells. In effect the PC shows a number (in this case eight) of small videos, one per bell - all at the same time. It does this while still maintaining the precise timing of the bell sounds which are accurate to one hundredth of a second.
Chris Hughes, Inventor of Abel Software says that his invention precisely imitates the real experience of bell ringing with others.
"When a ringer is ringing with real ringers they have to keep their bell in time with them partly by listening and partly by watching when the other ringer ring. So that you pull after somebody else to get your bell in the right place in the order. What the simulator programme does is provide something that is just like that. It receives the signal from the bell up in the bell chamber and it makes the pictures of the other bells and the sounds of the other bells. The ringer rings with those virtual ringers just like they do with real ringers in real life."
The simulator also deals with all the intricacies of the constantly changing pattern being rung, signals being received from sensors attached to the bells and from the keyboard or mouse. It uses that information to display realistic moves on the screen, scrolling some areas, and still making bell sounds several times a second with absolutely precise timing.
With an ageing population of campanologists, it is hoped that the use of technology in bell towers will encourage young people to take up this traditional pastime and so continue the tradition.
AP Television
London, UK - 2nd December 2014
1.
