continent. \u003cbr/\u003eThe kaleidoscope of images and themes is a fitting backdrop to the debate about what it means to be African and an artist. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Jo'burg Art Fair, in the city's wealthy financial and shopping district of Sandton, brings together 22 major galleries from Europe, the U.S. and Africa showcasing works on sale from US$150 to US$750,000.\u003cbr/\u003eCovering themes from Africa's past and present, some of the works confront the viewer with uncomfortable images.\u003cbr/\u003eJihan El-Tahri, a film maker from Egypt says people need to understand the past in order to go ahead in to the future. \u003cbr/\u003eThere is also work by some of South Africa's top artists in display. \u003cbr/\u003ePainter Sam Hlengetho's work reflects African influence on music. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says the fair is about a collective experience.  \u003cbr/\u003eSinger Moshe is a fan of South African art. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says there is a lot of talent and creativity here. \u003cbr/\u003eSimon Njami, the fair's curator says the space was designed to engage visitors directly with the artworks. \u003cbr/\u003eNjami says it is the job of the curator to create an \"artificial space where people are going to circulate.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAfricans rarely even get a chance to see, let alone buy, contemporary art of the continent. \u003cbr/\u003eMajor international exhibitions of contemporary African art rarely come to Africa. \u003cbr/\u003ePeter Herrmann, an artist based in Berlin says that his painting of the 99 names of Allah and may prove controversial for some Muslims. \u003cbr/\u003eIt shows a young Algerian woman in modern dress on a background of the names of Allah written in Arabic.  \u003cbr/\u003eTwo years ago, London auction house Bonhams hosted its first sale focusing on South African art. \u003cbr/\u003eSouth Africa, buoyed by nearly a decade of economic growth, has seen an increase in the number of wealthy individuals looking to spend money on art and new galleries have opened across the country.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the South African art-buying public remains small, and still almost exclusively white.\u003cbr/\u003eWith post-apartheid South Africa grappling with high unemployment and mass poverty, the handful of public galleries barely have budgets to buy emerging artists' works let alone South African artists
