(Aug. 4)\u003cbr/\u003e [Notes:ANCHOR VOICE]  \u003cbr/\u003eif it were up to me, i'd ban drivers from texting immediately\u003cbr/\u003eRay LaHood/Transportation Secretary \u003cbr/\u003e     The transportation secretary wants to put the brakes on texting while driving.\u003cbr/\u003e     Ray LaHood announced Tuesday he's convening a summit of experts next month to figure out what to do about distracted drivers.\u003cbr/\u003ewe need to put an end to unsafe cell phone use, typing on blackberrys and other activities that require drivers to take their eyes off the road and focus away from driving\u003cbr/\u003eRay LaHood/Transportation Secretary\u003cbr/\u003e     in a study released last week, Virginia Tech researchers found drivers of heavy trucks were 23 times more likely to crash if they were texting.\u003cbr/\u003e     Officials said the risks of texting generally applied to all drivers, not just truckers.\u003cbr/\u003e     And a separate report by Car and Driver magazine found texting and driving is more dangerous than drunk driving.\u003cbr/\u003e     Despite the risk-- some drivers said they continue to use their cell phone when they're on the road.     \u003cbr/\u003esot: I think texting is really stupid b/c you have to look at the phone, you have to look at the keys. And you're not looking at the road\u003cbr/\u003eChris Childs/driver\u003cbr/\u003etexting while driving is dangerous but i've done it before. One time I actually hit the curb so I learned the lesson on that\u003cbr/\u003eKamaria Miller/driver\u003cbr/\u003e     Fourteen states and the city of Washington have passed laws making texting while driving illegal.\u003cbr/\u003e     But LaHood said past safety initiatives like seat belts have shown that a simple ban often isn't enough to get drivers to change their habits.\u003cbr/\u003e
