He became a monk after narrowly...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eGerman/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eFour and a half centuries after his death, German church and state leaders paid tribute Sunday to the life of Martin Luther.\u003cbr/\u003eThe son of  a miner was never one to accept meekly the status quo. \u003cbr/\u003eHe became a monk after narrowly escaping a lightning strike in a storm, but quickly rebelled against the harsh discipline of a monk's life.\u003cbr/\u003eAs a punishment, he was transferred to the east German town of Wittenberg.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was here that he was to make his mark in world history.\u003cbr/\u003eLuther is most famous for the attack on the sale of indulgences - the corrupt 16th century system where wealthy Catholics would buy their way out of their religious duties. \u003cbr/\u003eHe famously challenged the rule of Rome on 31st October, 1517, when he nailed his 95 Theses to this church door in Wittenberg - the act generally seen as the trigger of the Protestant Reformation.\u003cbr/\u003eThe following year Luther was called to face the ire of Emperor Charles the Fifth, who demanded he retract his criticism of the Catholic Church.\u003cbr/\u003eHis reply was to attack the papal system even more strongly.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite his criticism, Luther was allowed to leave and traveled back to eastern Germany where  his supporter Friedrich the Wise faked his arrest and hid him in Eisenach's Wartburg Castle.\u003cbr/\u003eLuther spent 10 months in Wartburg Castle translating a Greek version of the Bible into German.\u003cbr/\u003eFor the first time, the New Testament was now accessible to the general public.\u003cbr/\u003eNow, plans are afoot to turn the legacy of Luther into a major tourist attraction. \u003cbr/\u003eOfficials are planning to boost tourism with a year of exhibits, concerts and other events linked to Luther, who now has more than 70 (m) million followers worldwide.\u003cbr/\u003eBefore the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, communist officials in the former East Germany tried to portray Luther as an early hero of the class struggle.\u003cbr/\u003eThe local museum in Wittenberg is packed  with memorabilia dedicated to life of Luther, and its director acknowledges his impact on modern Germany. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (German)\u003cbr/\u003e\"The translation of the bible has retained it's relevance up to today, with people who have never read the bible using Lutheran idioms.
