These are nomadic, pastoral people who live by their livestock, who depend on their livestock for food, and they are going to be left with nothing\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Trevor Ross, Spokesman, World Food Programme\u003cbr/\u003eMore than 300 people were gathered on Tuesday in dusty, parched Nanam for an aid handout from the U-N food agency.\u003cbr/\u003eSince March, the agency has twice distributed seven pounds of maize to anyone who could make their way here. \u003cbr/\u003eBut in an area where an A-K-47 automatic rifle can be bought for seven cows and the tribal histories are steeped in warrior culture, running an aid operation is not easy.\u003cbr/\u003eThe price of an A-K-47 is said to have shrunk from 50 cows to around 6, with the proliferation of small arms since the 1980s.\u003cbr/\u003eBy contrast, a Turkana man wishing to marry must pay a bride price of 20 cows.\u003cbr/\u003eBesides undermining the work of aid agencies, the insecurity in the region is also a major cause of hunger.\u003cbr/\u003eBut despite the desperation, food is being distributed in a spirit of cooperation.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"We are distributing our food based on community targeting.
