Wide of Barhoum talking to journalists. \u003cbr/\u003eA footbridge to a disputed holy site in Jerusalem was reopened on Wednesday, Israeli police reported, easing a political stand-off that threatened to erupt into unrest.\u003cbr/\u003eThe walkway's closure earlier this week was to have been a prelude to its demolition.  \u003cbr/\u003eJerusalem municipal authorities argued that the Mughrabi footbridge is a fire hazard and structurally unsound.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Muslims vehemently object to any construction at the holy site.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a statement on Tuesday, the municipality said that the government had called off the demolition plans and will be shoring up the bridge instead.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Israeli Prime Minister's office refused to comment on the issue.\u003cbr/\u003eThe walkway is the only access point from the Old City's Jewish Quarter and is used by Jews and tourists, while Muslims use other entrances from the adjacent Muslim Quarter.\u003cbr/\u003eBut any Israeli activity around the contested Old City compound known to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary and to Jews as the Temple Mount provokes friction with Jordan, the Palestinians and elsewhere in the Arab world. Rival claims to the compound have sparked deadly violence in the past.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite the Israeli decision to repair the bridge rather than rebuild it, Hamas spokesman in Gaza said that once again \"Israel has crossed all the red lines\" and called on Muslims across the Arab world to wage a \"war\" to defend the Muslim sites. \u003cbr/\u003eThe hilltop complex is home to Islam's third-holiest shrine, the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, and was the site of two biblical Jewish temples.\u003cbr/\u003eThe bridge was built in 2004 as a temporary replacement for an adjacent earth ramp that collapsed in a snowstorm. \u003cbr/\u003eMuslim leaders charge that any work in the area is designed to destroy their holy sites, and their opposition has blocked any plans to renovate or replace
