In those patients we have to transfuse them immediately or they're going to die.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION:  Dr. Stephan Lynn, Director of Emergency Medicine,\u003cbr/\u003eSt. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital Center\u003cbr/\u003eBut when it comes to elective surgery, many American hospitals are offering what's called a \"bloodless\" approach. \u003cbr/\u003eNew Jersey's Englewood Hospital for one has reduced its reliance on blood transfusions by over thirty in the past three years.\u003cbr/\u003eAt this \"bloodless\" surgery ward, a team of orthopedic surgeons use brute force and skill to replace the hip of Louis Braun.\u003cbr/\u003eAs a Jehovah's Witness, Braun's religious convictions forbid him from receiving blood transfusions.\u003cbr/\u003eBut since hip surgeries are usually very bloody, these doctors use a cell-saver machine to collect, clean and recycle Louis Braun's own blood by suctioning it from the wound.\u003cbr/\u003eThey also use a thin yellow instrument called an electro-cauterizer to seal the patient's bleeding blood vessels and reduce his blood loss.\u003cbr/\u003eFor his part, Braun has been taking the prescription drug Procrit over the past several weeks to boost his red blood cell count prior to surgery.\u003cbr/\u003eDoctor Aryeh Shander, who helped establish Englewood's bloodless surgical units, claims his hospital's technology is so sophisticated it can even save lives of patients whose hemoglobin count is close to zero.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"We've had patients who have dropped their blood count significantly which in the past was considered to be not compatible with life and those patients can be interviewed - as a matter of fact they're alive and well and back to normal life so that the fact that someone has lost significant amounts of blood is not by any means a deterrent for this programme.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION:  Doctor Aryeh Shander, Chief of Anesthesiology, Englewood Hospital\u003cbr/\u003eBut not everyone agrees.\u003cbr/\u003eThe director of New York's St. Luke's Emergency Department sticks to tried and true blood transfusions for patients in this dire condition.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE:  (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"They are beyond bloodless surgery, they will not benefit from medications that will stimulate blood, they need to have their blood count elevated within seconds of arrival in the emergency department.
