End shot of members of House Foreign Affairs Committee\u003cbr/\u003eDemocratic leaders in Congress warned the White House on Friday not to launch an attack against Iran without first seeking approval from lawmakers.\u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking alongside House Speaker Nancy Pelosi at the National Press Club, Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid said \"the president does not have the authority to launch military action in Iran without first seeking congressional authorisation.\"\u003cbr/\u003eReid and Pelosi made back-to-back speeches at Friday's event as part of an effort to have the first and last word on the president's annual State of the Union Speech to Congress next week.\u003cbr/\u003eThe leaders promised an up-or-down vote on Bush's proposal to send more troops to Iraq and pledged to provide troops already there with \"everything they need.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut they made clear that continuing to fund the war should not be mistaken for support of US president George W. Lee Hamilton, the Democratic co-chair of the Iraq Study Group, told the House Foreign Affairs Committee on Friday that the US must try to engage Iran and Syria in a constructive dialogue on Iraq
