music.\u003cbr/\u003eTraditional Nubian rhythms are being mixed with African hip-hop to create a whole new sound that's coming out of the slums surrounding Nairobi. \u003cbr/\u003eThe United Nations' NGO UNICEF describes Kibera on the outskirts of Nairobi as the world's largest slum. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is home to half a million people. \u003cbr/\u003e100,000 of those are of Nubian descent. \u003cbr/\u003eNubians came to Kenya 75 years ago from Sudan after being recruited and serving with the British Army in the King's African Rifles regiment.\u003cbr/\u003eThe British then settled them in what is now Kibera, a maze of dwellings topped by rusting iron roofs.\u003cbr/\u003eNow Kibera's Nubians are keeping their traditions alive and relevant by fusing them with modern sensibilities. \u003cbr/\u003eNoah, who goes by the name Refigah, the Nubian word for friend, grew up in Kibera and is hip hop artist and a practicing Muslim. \u003cbr/\u003eHis music blends traditional Nubian rhythms and an african hip-hop style. \u003cbr/\u003eRefigah said his music helps him spread a message of pride in his heritage and to try to expose the problems of the Nubian community as a minority.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Kibera people live in badly constructed dwellings and receive no government services. \u003cbr/\u003eRefigah is one of the musicians performing at a evening to showcase Nubian culture and music.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother musician is Phillip Kabush, who is known by his Nubian name Unique Arafat. \u003cbr/\u003eHis family originated in Sudan, and he was raised in Uganda in a Nubian community. \u003cbr/\u003eNow he lives in Nairobi and he sings hip-hop songs in a mixture of Arabic and Swahili to make the Nubian culture relevant to a younger generation. \u003cbr/\u003eBut money is an issue and he can't afford to pay for a studio to record his songs.  \u003cbr/\u003eHowever beneath a nightclub's orange neon lights and a spinning disco ball, Unique Arafat and other  descendants of Africa's ancient Nubian tribe gather in full regalia to celebrate being 'Nubian'\u003cbr/\u003eBut the crowd, who turned out in force for \"Nubian Night,\" was not there just for a glimpse into the past. \u003cbr/\u003eAbout an hour into the concert, the vibe switched from the traditional plaintive drumming and chanting to loud, explosive hip-hop.\u003cbr/\u003eThe concert was designed for Nubians in Kenya, there are believed to be 200,000 of them here, to keep their traditions alive and relevant by fusing them with modern sensibilities. \u003cbr/\u003eThe evening was focused on Nubian pride, with many performers wearing the tribe's elaborate clothes,  the men wore black and white with a red \"karbush\" hat; the women were wrapped in bright fabrics in shades of
