methods with modern-day technology, they hope their initial  success in their fight against the dry desert will help millions of others across the world.  \u003cbr/\u003eLittle lives in the Negev desert in southern Israel -- summer temperatures can reach a  scorching 45 degrees Celsius and a paltry 80 millimetres of rain falls a year. \u003cbr/\u003eThose animals that do survive here in this unforgiving land face a constant struggle in  their search for water. \u003cbr/\u003eBut in the midst of this barren landscape, a small, man-made oasis exists. \u003cbr/\u003eDoctor Pedro Berliner of the Ben Gurion University heads a project that hopes to break  the cycle of near-constant drought.\u003cbr/\u003eHis team harvests water from flash floods and use it to irrigate a relatively small area of  land, much in the same way that the ancient Nabetians used to collect their water.\u003cbr/\u003e\"With 80mm of rain fall, nothing can really grow and we are able to grow things by only come once every three years,  would disperse over a wide area and quickly evaporate.\u003cbr/\u003eInstead, it is collected and stored in underground wells to irrigate this orchard.\u003cbr/\u003eA reminder of the ancient Nabetian culture is found in the ruins of the city of Avdat  situated on the hill top above Dr Berliner's personal oasis.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Nabetians were originally traders, transporting goods from Arabia to the  Mediterranean. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter the Roman invasion of the region, the Nabetians were forced into agriculture and  turned their energy into finding water in this parched land.\u003cbr/\u003eSoon they were growing wheat and grapes -- their wine quickly became famous through  out the ancient world.\u003cbr/\u003eToday, two thousand years after the last Nabetian died, Dr Berliner admits to borrowing  heavily from their ideas but combines it with modern technology.\u003cbr/\u003eWater measuring equipment is used to regulate the flow of water into the area. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the real secret of his trees lie underground -- their roots reach down to a depth of  eight metres searching for water. \u003cbr/\u003eIn this way the trees can survive even if there is no rainfall for three years or more. \u003cbr/\u003eDr. Pedro Berliner hopes his research will help others outside  Israel -- desertification is  a big problem in many developing countries.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This water can be used not only for fruit trees like the once we have her.
