Watch and listen to how the iconic composer played each note?\u003cbr/\u003eThat's the magic of the player piano -- which brought recorded music into people's living rooms long before there were records, CDs or i-Pods. \u003cbr/\u003eNow a project at Stanford University is restoring player pianos from a century ago. \u003cbr/\u003eProfessors at Stanford University want to unlock the secrets of the player piano - the high-tech music machine of the early 20th Century. \u003cbr/\u003eStanford researchers have launched an ambitious effort to restore and study instruments known as reproducing pianos that recorded major composers performing their own work in the early 20th century.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This technology of the reproducing piano was really astonishing to people at the time because they could hear major pianists playing music exactly the way they played in performance,\" says Jerry McBride, head music librarian at Stanford.\u003cbr/\u003eThe researchers also plan to preserve and digitise thousands of perforated paper rolls that recorded and played back piano performances with impressive accuracy. They eventually hope to put the recordings online.\u003cbr/\u003eStanford recently acquired a private collection of 10 player pianos and more than seventy-five hundred rolls. they include recordings by Scott Joplin, Claude Debussey and George Gershwin.\u003cbr/\u003eMusic Historian, Kumaran Arul explains the significance of the works: \"In some cases we have no other recordings of these great artists, so in that sense they are an incredibly rare and very valuable window into the past, absolutely.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHe says the collection is relevant to people interested in popular and classical music: \"It contains treasures  for historians and for people who are interested in early music making from the time, both popular and classical.\"\u003cbr/\u003eResearchers are painstakingly going through the libraries of music rolls to uncover the music from a century ago. \u003cbr/\u003eJerry McBride, Head Music Librarian explains: \"What really excites me about this as an archivist and librarian is the fact that we're working with our faculty and our students to sort of bring this music back to life again from almost 100 years ago.\"\u003cbr/\u003eGeorge Barth, who heads Stanford's keyboard programmes, said he brings out the reproducing pianos in class so his students can learn from the masters.\u003cbr/\u003eThe researchers gather once a week to hear the sounds from so long ago. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We meet on Tuesday evenings for a couple of hours, and we can bring these machines out. And we can sit there and allow our students to hear Rachmaninoff play, hear Gershwin play,\" says Barth. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Our students are hearing a sort of richness, flexibility and freedom,\" Barth said. \"They're astonished at the things that they hear because they're so unexpected.
