Mid of sushi on tray\u003cbr/\u003eUS federal health officials are investigating a growing outbreak of salmonella that has sickened 93 people in 19 states and Washington D.C., the country's Centre for Disease Control (CDC) said on Wednesday.\u003cbr/\u003eThe agency released a statement on its website on Wednesday afternoon stating that \"the investigation has not conclusively identified a food source.\"\u003cbr/\u003eA Food and Drug Administration memo released to employees Tuesday says the culprit could be sushi and that spicy tuna rolls are \"highly suspect.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe CDC says ten people have been hospitalised, no deaths have been reported and they are working with the FDA in an investigation.\u003cbr/\u003eIn its memo, the FDA called the outbreak \"rapid and expanding in number of cases.\" \u003cbr/\u003eReports of the foodborne illness have mainly come from the eastern seaboard and Gulf Coast, though cases have been reported as far west as Missouri and Texas. \u003cbr/\u003eInvestigators are focusing on six clusters of restaurants in Texas, Wisconsin, Maryland, Rhode Island and Connecticut.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We would already assume it's widespread,\" said Jaydee Hanson of the Centre for Food Safety, a non-profit, public interest organisation.\u003cbr/\u003eFDA spokesman Curtis Allen would not confirm or elaborate on the information.\u003cbr/\u003eInvestigators are conducting interviews with sick patients about what they have eaten and analysing menus and food ingredients to trace the path of the bacteria.\u003cbr/\u003eHanson said the salmonella could come from tuna or anything else used to make spicy tuna rolls, from fresh vegetables to seasonings.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said the particular salmonella strain in question, Salmonella Bareilly, is also common in well and spring water.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"They might be serving some kind of bottled water at all these places that's contaminated,\" said Hanson.\u003cbr/\u003eHe added that there are a number of possible sources for the salmonella that the government will need to track down.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe FDA memo noted that there is likely a 30-day lag time between when people become sick and when cases are reported to health officials.\u003cbr/\u003ePrevious outbreaks of this particular strain have been linked to bean sprouts, which are grown in warm, damp conditions. \u003cbr/\u003eThe most common symptoms of salmonella are diarrhoea, abdominal cramps and fever within eight to 72 hours of eating the contaminated
