would refuse to meet them next week when he visits the UK.\u003cbr/\u003eEarlier this week the Argentine embassy in London announced that Timerman would be in the country to host a two-day meeting of MEPs (members of the European Parliament) and Latin American politicians who are supportive of Argentina's claim over the disputed Islands.\u003cbr/\u003eBritish foreign secretary William Hague invited Timerman to meet him to discuss the issue, but the stipulation that members of the local government of the islands, known as the legislative assembly, would also attend the meeting drew a furious response, and the Argentine Foreign Ministry announced they would not participate in any discussions that included Falklands government representatives.\u003cbr/\u003eTimerman insisted that the United Nations regarded the dispute over the Falklands, which they call Las Malvinas, as a bilateral issue between London and Buenos Aires.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's disappointing, but not entirely unexpected,\" said Jan Cheek, member of the Falkland Islands' Legislative Assembly, speaking on Friday in the capital Port Stanley. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The stance of Argentina has for a long time been not only to ignore the wishes of the people who have lived on these islands for nearly a hundred and eighty years, but to virtually ignore their existence,\" she said. \u003cbr/\u003eTimerman also said on Friday that a referendum planned for March 2013 on whether the residents wished to retain their current political status as an overseas territory of the United Kingdom was \"illegal.\"\u003cbr/\u003eWhile the Islands are internally self-governing, the UK continues to have sovereignty and Westminster remains responsible for matters including defence and foreign affairs.\u003cbr/\u003eArgentina meanwhile claims that the Islands are theirs, and have requested that the UK government enter into negotiations over their sovereignty.\u003cbr/\u003eA short but bitter war followed an Argentine incursion onto the South Atlantic Archipelago on 2 April 1982 as Britain attempted to regain the territory it had ruled for 150 years.\u003cbr/\u003eAn increasingly volatile war of words between London and Buenos Aires has escalated in recent months.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Argentine Government of President Cristina Kirchner has been pushing for negotiations over the sovereignty of the Islands. \u003cbr/\u003eLast month she urged the British Prime Minister David Cameron to abide by a 1965 UN resolution to negotiate a solution to the dispute.\u003cbr/\u003eThe South American nation rejects all calls to include the local government of the Falklands in discussions, refusing to recognise their existence.\u003cbr/\u003eA historic referendum on the future political status of the Falkland Islands is set to take place on the 10 and 11 of March. \u003cbr/\u003eIt will be a simple yes or no question asking \"Do you wish the Falkland Islands to retain their current political status as an overseas territory of the United Kingdom?\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"We are just looking forward to something that runs smoothly on the day and gets a very clear message out to
