We are encouraged by the overtures of the NDP (New Democratic Party), clearly those issues we may not be able to resolve with other political parties but we have to work together on this issue. And they are very relieved, very reassured  to hear that we have legislation, that we have regulations that we are setting in place short term targets because the international community knows that those are key to making sure we can make a contribution to our 2012 obligation.\"\u003cbr/\u003e5. Camera crew\u003cbr/\u003eCanadian Environmental Minister Rona Ambrose defended her country's environmental policy at the UN climate change conference in Nairobi on Wednesday.\u003cbr/\u003eThe two-week meeting has been working on technical issues involving the Kyoto Protocol, which obliges 35 industrial nations to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases by 5 per cent below 1990 levels by 2012.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We are moving forward very aggressively to put a plan in place a programme to make progress on our Kyoto targets and to also put in place measures in terms of programmes to address climate change,\" she told reporters.\u003cbr/\u003eAmbrose recently introduced the Clean Air Act, which basically opted out of the international accord. \u003cbr/\u003eThe proposed air act, which will face heavy opposition when it comes up for a vote before Canada's House of Commons, would cut greenhouse gas emissions in half, but not until 2050.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We have to work together on this issue. You can see those  divisions on the global level, but we can't have those kind of divisions on our own national level,\" Ambrose said.\u003cbr/\u003eEarlier on Wednesday Canada's opposition politicians said it was an embarrassment to send Environment Minister Rona Ambrose to the conference while refusing to act on cutting greenhouse gases.\u003cbr/\u003eUnder the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, Canada committed to a 6 per cent cut in greenhouse emissions from 1990 levels by 2012. \u003cbr/\u003eCanada's emissions are now 30 per cent above 1990 levels.\u003cbr/\u003eUN Secretary General, Kofi Annan told world leaders not to be \"economically defensive\" in dealing with climate change when he addressed the conference earlier on Wednesday.\u003cbr/\u003eScientists attribute at least some of the past century's 0.6-degree-Celsius (1-degree-Fahrenheit) rise in global temperatures to the atmospheric accumulation of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases. \u003cbr/\u003eContinued
