For years, people have travelled to India for transplant operations ... now the Indian  government wants to end the country's...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eIndia's lucrative trade in human organs is flourishing despite a new law effectively  banning the practice.     \u003cbr/\u003eFor years, people have travelled to India for transplant operations ... now the Indian  government wants to end the country's reputation as a human organ bazaar.\u003cbr/\u003eBut as APTV discovered, India's organ trade is still very much big business. \u003cbr/\u003eEvery year, tens of thousands of Indians and foreigners hope for a kidney transplant in  India.\u003cbr/\u003ePatients suffering from kidney disease must contend with painful and costly dialysis  until a kidney becomes available for transplant.\u003cbr/\u003eIndia's Parliament recently passed a law which bans any commercial trade in human  organs, except where the donor is brain dead. \u003cbr/\u003eThe organ trade is worth (m) millions of  dollars, but government medical authorities no  longer want India to be seen as a nation of organ suppliers.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's such an established trade. As you know, people come from abroad, the Middle  East, even England. There are people who come to India for organ transplants.\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Professor S. S. Nundy/ All India Institute\u003cbr/\u003eOne clinic in Madras has yet to put the law into practice.\u003cbr/\u003eDoctors at the Willingsdon Clinic perform at least six kidney transplants a week. \u003cbr/\u003eNearly all of the kidneys are taken from live donors not related to the recipient.\u003cbr/\u003eIt costs 100-thousand rupees- or three-thousand -500 hundred dollars - for a donated  kidney, the transplant operation and postoperative treatment. \u003cbr/\u003eThe donor receives 33-thousand rupees, or eleven-hundred dollars. \u003cbr/\u003eThe doctors at Willingsdon say there is nothing morally wrong with what they do.\u003cbr/\u003eA sick person needs a kidney, and a poor person needs money. \u003cbr/\u003eChief Surgeon Dr. K.C. Reddy believes that as long as the donor is fully aware of the  operation and the compensation, then he is helping improve two people's lives.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We're not talking about a kidney that you want to have for lunch. Reddy, Willingsdon Clinic\u003cbr/\u003eIn order to eliminate the greedy middleman, Dr. Reddy established the Pandalai Clinic,  next to the Willingsdon clinic in Madras..\u003cbr/\u003eInterested donors - many from the slums-  make initial enquiries about the procedure.\u003cbr/\u003eIf the donor decides to sell one of his kidneys, he must undergo medicals tests as well  as psychiatric consultation. \u003cbr/\u003e26-year old Ramdas Govindan says he's unemployed with two sons and a sickly wife.\u003cbr/\u003eHe owes his local moneylender 13-thousand rupees, or four hundred dollars.\u003cbr/\u003eHe also wants to buy a motorized rickshaw so that he can run his own delivery  business.\u003cbr/\u003eRamdas has decided to go ahead with the operation.\u003cbr/\u003eOtherwise he says, he will never be able to provide for his family and keep his pride.\u003cbr/\u003eMost donors hear about the operation and the clinics through word of mouth. \u003cbr/\u003eSuddenly a neighbour has a new home or a new business.\u003cbr/\u003eThe only thing physically different about him is a long scar where their kidney was  removed.\u003cbr/\u003eRamdas lives in Old Washerman's Pet, a slum where many residents have sold a  kidney.\u003cbr/\u003eNot too long ago, each of these women owed a lot of money.\u003cbr/\u003eThey volunteered to sell their kidneys since their husbands couldn't afford to take time  off from work.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile all the money is now gone, they were able to clear their debts, buy jewels for  their daughters' dowries and buy household goods.\u003cbr/\u003e\"No, I don't feel there is anything wrong with what I did. I needed money and the other  person needed life. I had something to sell.
