Wide view of briefing room\u003cbr/\u003eThe Pentagon says that next week all 594 terrorist suspects held at the US prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, will be notified of their right to contest their detention in the US federal court.\u003cbr/\u003eThey will also be told of their option to appear before a military panel to challenge their status as \"enemy combatants.\" \u003cbr/\u003eU-S Navy Secretary, Gordon England, who is overseeing the process at Guantanamo Bay, made the announcement at a Pentagon news conference on Friday.\u003cbr/\u003eThe detainees won the right to seek their freedom last month after the Supreme Court rejected the Bush administration's argument that the men could be kept in military custody indefinitely, without charges or trial, because they were picked up overseas on suspicion of terrorism.\u003cbr/\u003eEngland said that the detainees would also be told of their right to contest their designation as enemy combatants as well as the right to be assisted by personal representatives during newly announced tribunals.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Pentagon has not approved the detainee's use of lawyers, or attorney-client privilege, in the hearings.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Wednesday, the Bush Administration announced the military would review the individual cases of the prisoners to determine whether they are being legally held. \u003cbr/\u003eOfficials said the move was in preparation for the flood of litigation from detainees following the Supreme Court's ruling.\u003cbr/\u003eSecretary England, who has been designated to run both an annual status review of the detainees as well as the new combatant status tribunals, admitted the Defence Department was facing logistical hurdles to inform the camp inmates of their rights. \u003cbr/\u003eHe also told reporters during a briefing that there would be difficulties getting civilian lawyers access to the detainees.\u003cbr/\u003eAbout 600 foreigners are being held at the US naval base on suspicion of being members of al-Qaida or the Taliban, all but a handful without charge or access to lawyers.\u003cbr/\u003eIn another development late this week, the San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that prisoners at the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba who are challenging their detention must do so in Washington D.C. \u003cbr/\u003eThe appeals court said the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia was the appropriate venue for the 594 detainees given that they are overseas and are suing the federal
