And the numbers of withdrawals over the last few days has, or rather last week, has really skyrocketed. Various of people reading election posters\u003cbr/\u003eA candidate in this weekend's parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan said on Thursday she was threatened with expulsion from the ruling party if she didn't withdraw from the race, strengthening allegations that hundreds have been forced out of the campaign.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There are no candidates like myself and there is no place for such candidates today. That's why they (the authorities) want to get rid of me,\" Farida Khalilova said.\u003cbr/\u003eAlmost one-quarter of the candidates registered for this weekend's parliamentary election have dropped out, according to the Central Election Commission.\u003cbr/\u003eHuman rights groups and opposition activists alleged it was due to official pressure. \u003cbr/\u003eThe election commission said 496 candidates had dropped out.\u003cbr/\u003eThat includes 180 from the ruling New Azerbaijan Party, founded by late President Geidar Aliev and now led by his son, the country's current president, Ilham Aliev.\u003cbr/\u003eMatilda Bogner, the Baku-based representative of Human Rights Watch, said the number of withdrawals had skyrocketed over the past week.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I am concerned that that is part of the government campaign against candidates that it does not want to see winning,\" she said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe ruling party registered 109 candidates running on its behalf, but hundreds of other members of the party joined the race on their own.\u003cbr/\u003eThe presidential election that Aliev won in 2003 was criticised as undemocratic. \u003cbr/\u003eMany fear a repeat of that experience, including the rioting that broke out afterward, in which three people were killed.\u003cbr/\u003eFew outside the opposition think it could prevail in the election, even without the severe restrictions the authorities have imposed and the strong pro-government bias in state media, which have accused opposition candidates of being radicals and potential criminals.\u003cbr/\u003eStill, in
