If he wins, the opposition will likely pour its energies immediately into defeating Chavez in scheduled 2006 elections.\u003cbr/\u003eThere's also the possibility of unrest if the outcome is close and either side alleges fraud.\u003cbr/\u003eIn February and March, 14 people were killed in rioting when opponents took to the street to protest what they said were government efforts to thwart the recall referendum.\u003cbr/\u003eVice President Jose Vicente Rangel - who would head the 30-day transitional government if the president were to lose - struck a more conciliatory tone on Friday, predicting a landslide Chavez victory but promising talks with \"democratic\" opposition groups.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Chavistas,\" as his supporters are known, view him as the first leader to care about the poor after decades of rule by two entrenched political parties whose credibility crumbled after years of corruption scandals.\u003cbr/\u003eChavez has promised to abide by the results of the referendum and has urged followers to the same. \u003cbr/\u003eOpponents accuse Chavez, a close ally of Cuban President Fidel Castro, of seeking to establish an authoritarian, socialist-leaning regime.\u003cbr/\u003eBridging divisions has been a key opposition campaign promise. Among their top complaints against Chavez is his aggressive \"revolutionary\" rhetoric, which they say has pitted rich against poor.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Enrique Mendoza, leader the Democratic Coordinator opposition coalition, warned opposition leaders would only consider talks with a triumphant Chavez if the government ends its alleged political persecution.\u003cbr/\u003eSeveral Chavez opponents are in jail, though the government says they face legitimate criminal charges. The most prominent is Henrique Capriles, the opposition mayor of a Caracas district, who faces charges of leading violent protests in front of the Cuban Embassy during the 2002 coup.
