Tanks cannot pass through. ... they (Syria's regular army) have air power ... but because they don't fly low it's difficult to aim so they usually can't hit their target,\" explained Nizar, who says he is a member of the Free Syrian Army. \u003cbr/\u003eOn Thursday, government troops and rebels clashed in opposition bastions of Aleppo, a city of 3 (m) million people.\u003cbr/\u003eConflicting news emerged over which side was controlling the Salaheddine neighbourhood, the main rebel area in Aleppo.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Salaheddine (neighbourhood) was in our hands yesterday. It comes and goes,\" said Nizar.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"The whole world knows we don't have heavy weapons. We have anti-tank weapons and small arms. So we had to pull back. But we'll be back tomorrow. You can't say with certainty who controls what because it changes all the time,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eSlowly but surely, Nizar said, Aleppo will fall. \u003cbr/\u003eThe regime has been trying to drive rebels out of Aleppo for two weeks.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the blistering attacks on rebel positions from the ground and the air appear to be only slowly chipping away at the opposition's grip on its strongholds.\u003cbr/\u003eAleppo holds great symbolic and strategic importance. Some 25 miles (40 kilometres) from the Turkish border, it has been a pillar of regime support during the uprising. \u003cbr/\u003eAn opposition victory there would allow easier access for weapons and fighters from Turkey, where many rebels are based.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Syria uprising has left 19-thousand dead since it erupted in March 2011. The UN estimates that 1.5 (m) million people have been forced to abandon their homes but still remain in the country.\u003cbr/\u003e1. Whether supplies are coming from Hama, Idlib, or Latakia - all those routes are dangerous (for the Syrian army.)
